WHY is it so hard just to get a list of foods recommended for the DASH diet? I can find plenty of fnur fnur fnur about how it's the Bestest Diet EVAR and also plenty of "here, eat from this rigid menu of premade choices you'd rather starve than eat" and even tons of "this recipe is totes DASH-friendly, I promise" but Not! One! Friggin! Word! about what foods I can make my own menus and recipes from.

Thanks, but I don't do artificial sweetner artificial flavored shit, and is olive oil on the okay list or not? Because I don't fucking roast my vegetables in salad dressing for fuck's sake, yet THAT is the fat I keep being reassured I can eat in small amounts. (What in buggery fuck is premade salad dressing even doing on a hypertension diet, has anyone writing the advice LOOKED at the sodium content?)

Bullshit like this is why my blood pressure is rocketing, I swear.

Did you see the NBC News report tonight on fasting diets? http://www.nbcnews.com/nightly-news/video/there-is-growing-evidence-that-fasting-diets-really-work-661193795861

I've actually done this myself, and know a bunch of other folks who have done it. Amazingly, it does work: two NON-consecutive days a week, you limit your calories to 500. The other five days, you eat whatever you want. There are recipe books for it, as well (the particular diet I'm talking about is the 5:2 diet). One of the nice things is that since you know that tomorrow you can eat again, it makes it a lot easier to get through a fasting day.

What does it do for hypertension? DASH is supposedly the best way of regulating blood pressure via food. Only I can't get a damn list of the foods!

I've seen articles that say it helps, and others that say it doesn't. If that's your main focus, then I wouldn't go for it.

My impression is that the list of foods on the DASH diet is pretty generic: "vegetables, fruits and low-fat dairy products, as well as whole grains, fish, poultry and nuts. It offers limited portions of red meats, sweets and sugary beverages." Maybe they don't do specific food lists.

As non-native speaker - what's a DASH diet?

Diet Approach to Stopping Hypertension. Basically, it's managing blood pressure through food and exercise instead of medication. My blood pressure spiked frighteningly in the last 5 months.

Aha! That makes sense.

So, watch salt, watch fats, watch sugar, eat lots of fruits and veggies, prepare everything fresh and don't buy junk-food?

Basically. I have to go through my pantry with napalm this weekend, apparently.

The only DASH "book" I've read is from 2006, from NIH: Your Guide to Lowering Your Blood Pressure with DASH (pdf)

More information from NIH.

Per this, olive oil is allowed.

Not surprised in that regard, as the olive oil has lots of good fats.

How strange. Just replied with a link to sample menus from the Mayo Clinic (olive oil is approved, by the way) and LJ tells me that my comment was marked as 'spam'.

You don't loves me no more. :-)
