Oh, PUH-leeeze!

Someone over on [livejournal.com profile] fanthropology of all places has hijacked a thread on use of religion in Harry Potter fanon with what are doubtless the first shots fired in this year's "War on Christmas."

Mind you, when called out on the sentence It's now ILLEGAL to say "Merry Christmas" for public adverts on TV, radio, and print, his/her response was should have been more clear. What was typed was perfectly clear. It was also perfectly wrong.

I know that the Christmas sales season creeps earlier every year, but August is way too early to be dealing with this crap. Can we at least get the temperature below 80 before we have to deal with this year's round of OMGWTFXMAS!!!! or whatever it's going to be dubbed this next joyous holiday season?

ETA: What is it today, Schmucks on LJ on Parade? Now [livejournal.com profile] twistedchick has a troll who has "rebutted" her link to Alas, A Blog's Male Privilege Checklist with the "Nice Guy's Rebuttal," which includes, among other things, a complaint that women shouldn't bitch about being passed over for jobs and promotions because of their gender when they can use their sex appeal (or straight out sex) to get work. No, I'm not direct linking, I'm not going to encourage the hits on that website. Check TC's comments, unless she pulls that one.

::FACEPALM::

That crap is starting up NOW?!!?

::Makes note to start building the "Bitchslap Morons" machine.::

I guess today has been "random idiots posting in inappropriate forums" day.

Hold me?

You're both assuming the individual in question ever stops. Which, from the description, I'm guessing is kinda unlikely. They just have to work harder to find openings when the rest of us aren't going there. *facepalm.*

I. LOVE! That. Icon!

I'm so stealing that caption, now I just need to find the right Doctor expression.

Steal away!

now I just need to find the right Doctor expression.

Shouldn't be too hard. Tennant is about the only person on any show I'm currently watching who can give Amanda a run for her money in the facial expression department...

Hold me?

Sure, but am I your type? :>

Christ on a cracker. Way to make you side look stupid. They're all about keeping "The *Christ* in Christmas" but don't see the idiocy of the rampant commercialism of the event? I typically love the season but I'm starting to feel an internal backlash building. I'd say the big C in Christmas is Cash, Cash and more Cash.

[identity profile] neadods.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
That's the thing that was getting argued last year - what's very Christian about screaming that stores MUST be mandated to say "Christmas" and not even whispering when several of the megachurches shut down Christmas day for lack of attendance? Hello, just where are these people worshipping?

Just for grits and shins... what did he claim he really meant by "It's now ILLEGAL to say "Merry Christmas"..."???

[identity profile] neadods.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, should have been more clear. I know in many companies, such as Target, Macy's, and Daimler-Chrysler offices, you are barred from saying it. (Scroll down, I don't know how to link to direct responses.) This was in answer to my asking if the law against Merry Christmas was federal, state, or municipal.

Methinks that guy ought to ask for a refund from whatever college he's attending. Clearly, he's not being educated.

And give up the ability to wave vague stories about "getting in trouble in class for saying 'Merry Christmas'?"

Please pass on the following to this person, with my compliments:

The REAL attack on Christmas is coming from people like you. I used to enjoy wishing people a Merry Christmas, even though I am not myself Christian; it was a nice way to celebrate religious diversity and spread a little good cheer at the same time.

I can't do that any more. Why not? Because of people like you; saying "Merry Christmas" is now identifying yourself as a whackjob religious nutcase. Way to go, asshole -- by trying to hijack the phrase for yourselves, you've succeeded only in making it actively repugnant to anyone with a shred of decency.

Don't like being called a whackjob religious nutcase? There's an easy fix for that problem: stop acting like one. Stop repeating lies created out of whole cloth by people who only want your money. Stop trying to steal Christmas, and the spirit of giving, and Christianity itself, for your own selfish purposes. Go and actually READ the words of Jesus Christ, and follow them... because right now, you're squarely aligned with the Pharisees. If Jesus were to actually come back today and see what people like you are doing in his name, he'd never stop throwing up.

Companies prefer to be religion free to avoid lawsuits and boycotts. I cheerfully wish everyone I meet during the season a Merry Christmas whether they like it or not.

For every point on the male priveledge checklist, I can show you a real life, flesh and blood counterpoint. Men and women are equally capable of being losers. Or heroes. I'm tired of people hauling out reasons why men have it better, or women have it better. Until we get down to one gender that can impreganate itself, we will have it different, because we are different. I've never had a guy come panicking in scrounge mode into my offfice because his period started unexpectedly. This proves exactly nothing.
