Dude! Neil Gaiman is now discussing the BBC v Mazzmatazz issue!

Interesting discussion of Ianto and religion. If it weren't too late, I'd suggest a panel in religion in the Whoniverse, as not only are the character's personal beliefs up for talk, but I think there's a lot of juice in the way the Whoniverse has always classically explained religious phenomena with aliens and skience, but New Who not only has a lot of New Testament imagery, but Torchwood expressly talks about demons and gods. Not aliens, demons and gods. (Short topic title: Gridlock - statement of faith or illustration of atheism? Discuss. In comments if you'd like.)

Top posting: I said in comments that I have what I think is THE song for some of the characters in Doctor Who - that without a fanmix, I think that the lyrics of this one song sums them up perfectly. At some point, I'll try to find that song for everyone. In the meantime:

Rose
Walk of Life/Billie Piper (although it's Billie singing, I think of it as the Doctor speaking)
Lemme care for someone else
I don't wanna talk about myself
I need to shed the light on you
To understand the things you do
Could you share a little time
Break the bread and sip the wine
Now's no time to hesitate
Save me from this heavy weight

Are you gonna walk the walk of life with me
Are you gonna see more than you dream to see
Are you gonna walk hand in hand with me
(Can you be the one who sets my shadow free)
Are you gonna try and understand with me
Are you gonna be the best that you can be
Are you gonna walk the walk of life with me

Walk of life
Walk of life oh

Losing my reality
You can bring this back to me
With you I wanna spend my youth
With you I wanna live the truth
Who can pair so golden now
Sow the seed and grow the flower
Reap the one and clear our sins
This is where our life begins

Are you gonna walk the walk of life with me
Are you gonna see more than you dream to see
Are you gonna walk hand in hand with me
(Can you be the one who sets my shadow free)
Are you gonna try and understand with me
Are you gonna be the best that you can be
Are you gonna walk the walk of life with me

Don't let me walk alone
Now that I have touched my home
There'll always be a place for you
A time, a perfect space for you
You can rest your tired mind
My body’s temple you will find

Walk the walk of life with me
See more than you dream to see
Walk the walk of life with me
Yeah yeah

Are you gonna walk the walk of life with me
Are you gonna see more than you dream to see
Are you gonna walk hand in hand with me
Can you be the one who sets my shadow free
Are you gonna try and understand with me
Are you gonna be the best that you can be
Are you gonna walk the walk of life with me

Are you gonna walk the walk of life with me
See more than you ever dreamed to see
Be the one who’ll set my shadow free
Are you gonna walk the walk of life with me
Being all that, all the best of me
Are you gonna walk the walk of life with me

Are you gonna walk the walk of life with me
See more than you ever dreamed to see
Be the one who’ll set my shadow free
Are you gonna walk the walk of life with me
Being all that, all the best of me
Are you gonna walk the walk of life with me
Are you gonna walk the walk of life with me
Being all that, all the best of me
Are you gonna walk the walk of life with me

Martha
Time for Me to Fly/REO Speedwagon (he asked too much and gave too little, so she left)
I've been around for you
I've been up and down for you
But I just can't get any relief
I've swallowed my pride for you
I've lived and lied for you
But you still make me feel like a thief
You got me stealin' your love away
'Cause you never give it
Peeling the years away
And we can't relive it
I make you laugh
And you make me cry
I believe it's time for me to fly

You said we'd work it out
You said that you had no doubt
That deep down we were really in love
Oh, but I'm tired of holding on
To a feeling I know is gone
I do believe that I've had enough

I've had enough of the falseness
Of a worn out relation
Enough of the jealousy
And the intoleration
I make you laugh
And you make me cry
I believe it's time for me to fly

[Refrain:]
Time for me to fly
Oh, I've got to set myself free
Time for me to fly
And that's just how it's got to be
I know it hurts to say goodbye
But it's time for me to fly

Oh, don't you know it's...
[Refrain]
It's time for me to fly

The Doctor
The Great Historical Bum/Chad Mitchell Trio (written by Woody Guthrie) Does this really need explanation?
I was born about ten thousand years ago
There ain't nuthin' in this world that I don't know
I saw Peter Paul and Moses playin' ring-around-the-roses
And I'll whup the guy what says it isn't so

Well, I'm just a lonesome traveler, a great historical bum
Highly educated through history I have come
I built the Rock of Ages, it was in the year oh one
And that's about the biggest thing that Man has ever done

I saw Adam and Eve driven from the door
I'm the guy that picked the figleaves that they wore
And from behind the bushes peepin' saw the apple they was eatin'
And I swear that I'm the one that et the core

Now I built the garden of Eden, it was in the year oh two
Joined the apple-pickers union and I always paid my dues
I'm the man that signed the contract to raise the risin' sun
And that's about the biggest thing that Man has ever done

I taught Samson how to use his mighty hand
I showed Columbus to this happy land
And for Pharaoh's little kiddies I built all the pyramiddies
And to the Sahara carried all the sand

Now I was strawboss on the pyramids and the tower of Babel too
I opened up the ocean, let the mighty children through
I fought a million battles and I never lost a one
And that's about the biggest thing that Man has ever done

I taught Solomon his little ABC's
I'm the first one to eat Limburger cheese
And while floating down the bay with Methuseleh one day
I saw his whiskers floating in the breeze

Now I fought the revolution that set this country free
It was me and a couple of Indians that dumped the Boston tea
I won the battle of Valley Forge and the battle of Bully Run
And that's about the biggest thing that Man has ever done

Now Queen Elizabeth she fell in love with me
We were married in Milwaukee secretly
But I got tired of snooker and ran off with General Hooker
To go shootin' skeeters down in Tennessee

I'd suggest a panel in religion in the Whoniverse,

*makes note of that for conference* I'm folding a little of that into my paper, and I've been thinking of potentially bringing some of it into the morality panel.

Oh, and off the top of my head; here are 2 suggestions of songs for Jack, though I'd do both as slow, sad numbers (and may yet do so).

Carry On My Wayward Son (Kansas) http://www.lyrics007.com/Kansas%20Lyrics/Carry%20On%20My%20Wayward%20Son%20Lyrics.html

Doctor Time (Rick Trevino) http://www.lyricsdownload.com/rick-trevino-doctor-time-lyrics.html

For Ianto, I always think of him when I sing You Can Always Count on Me from City of Angels: http://www.lyricsondemand.com/soundtracks/c/cityofangelsmusicallyrics/youcanalwayscountonmelyrics.html

Religion is getting to be a large enough topic that it requires its own panel, I think, because there's far more to it than morality. (As an atheist, I'd certainly prefer to discuss it disconnected from morality, because otherwise it's too "only religious people are moral.")

Ooo, I like Doctor Time! And I've always been fond of You Can Always Count on Me, although I'm not sure I see Ianto in that. I'm pegging "What's Left of Me" for him:

Watch my life,
Pass me by,
In the rear view mirror
Pictures frozen in time
Are becoming clearer
I don't wanna waste another day
Stuck in the shadow of my mistakes

Yeah...

[Chorus]
Cause I want you,
And I feel you,
Crawling underneath my skin
Like a hunger,
Like a burning,
To find a place I've never been
Now I'm broken,
And I'm faded,
I'm half the man I thought I would be:
But you can have what's left of me

Ah...okay, I see your point, there. I was thinking more using it to try and disprove that or broaden it out (omnisexual Christ figure, screwed-up/confused divine figures, etc).

ooh, I like that song for Ianto as well. I always see You Can Always Count on Me with him in a slightly ironic, slightly self-deprecating sense, tracking Ianto's journey from 'I'm seducing my way in to save my girlfriend and that's it' to 'I'm falling for Jack but love Lisa' to 'I love/hate Jack and myself' to becoming comfortable of everything that's happened, and the last chorus being somewhat defiant (even though the song in context of the musical is self deprecating-- nif I'm turning 'Hopelessly Devoted to You' into a stalkerific song, this is an easy twist).

There's also the option of one of Ianto's songs as being Billy Joel's 'Captain Jack' as a soppy love song. 'Captain Jack will get you by tonight/Just a little push and you'll be smiling.'

"Stacy's Mom" for Sarah Jane? ;)

And thank you for reminding me of a topic I need to write about in my own LJ - ie. why atheists, and those who rebel against the religions they were raised with, are the most oppressive in including religious imagery and messages in their own stories.

Davies is one example of this phenomenon. J. Michael Straczynski, creator of Babylon 5, is another.

I'm thinking more towards something like "Strange Cup of Tea," which is already in my SJ mix. Although with her run as long and varied as the Doctor's, it's hard to pin just one song on her.

I don't know about oppressive religious imagery. I keep thinking of Straz's scene with the many different faiths of Earth stretching away in a long, long line. And I think that Rusty sometimes thinks he's saying one thing when he's doing another (a la the racial subtext as well.) For instance, Christian groups praising Gridlock when I see it as a very unsubtle atheist allegory.

At the risk of sounding rude, I think both you and the religious groups are wrong. :)

What I see both JMS and RTD aspiring to do is to create their own versions of Jesus 2.0 - yes, they're both dispensing with all the aspects of dogma that they don't believe in, or disagree with (and yes, there is a difference), but in their own way, each man wants to turn their protagonists into unquestionably holy saviors and messiahs.

RTD has been turning the Doctor (particularly Ten) into the Jesus Who Kicked Ass Against The Money-Lenders, all righteous indignation, whereas JMS turned Spider-Man, the first and ultimate "everyman hero," into an avatar for a timeless and Godlike "Spider-Totem" spirit, and he's said that he would "crawl through broken glass" to write Superman, whom every modern writer wants to turn into Jesus, preferably by retconning away his marriage to Lois and turning him into an eternal virgin. Oh, and in the meantime? JMS is writing Thor, God of Thunder.

They say they don't believe in God, but honestly, I think RTD and JMS' REAL problem is that they DO believe in God, but that they also believe he is not what he SHOULD be. Hence, they remake Jesus in their own images.

I'm currently running in 17 directions at once trying to get ready for Media*West and a daytrip to NYC all at once, so I don't have the brain cells for a long comment now. But I'm going to let it percolate because this is a conversation I'm going to enjoy.

In the meantime, I'm going to gloss my next statement, which will talk about the Doctor who has always been the one who saved us and RTD's work in Second Coming.

I can't talk about what Straz is doing in the comics because I don't read them (not in an "ugh, comics, I don't read them" way, in a "I don't have time to read everything I already want to read and comics went first in the life-cuts" way, please note.)

As opposed to the way Three in particular was written, laying down the law to UNIT all the time?

I think RTD and JMS' REAL problem is that they DO believe in God, but that they also believe he is not what he SHOULD be.

Oooo, I rather like this theory. Certainly a person can get more help and hope out of the Doctor than Aslan.

Wrong paradigm, especially considering the liberal crusader decade in which he was written. Three was always The Lone Progressive Reformer, fighting to make The System better by working from within. Especially considering how many times he was proven to have singlehandedly saved the world, UNIT kept Three on an astonishingly short leash.

If Jack is any song besides Right Said Fred's "I'm Too Sexy", then it's in addition, not instead. :-)
I'm too sexy for my love too sexy for my love
Love's going to leave me

I'm too sexy for my shirt too sexy for my shirt
So sexy it hurts
And I'm too sexy for Milan too sexy for Milan
New York and Japan

And I'm too sexy for your party
Too sexy for your party
No way I'm disco dancing

I'm a model you know what I mean
And I do my little turn on the catwalk
Yeah on the catwalk on the catwalk yeah
I do my little turn on the catwalk

I'm too sexy for my car too sexy for my car
Too sexy by far
And I'm too sexy for my hat
Too sexy for my hat what do you think about that

I'm a model you know what I mean
And I do my little turn on the catwalk
Yeah on the catwalk on the catwalk yeah
I shake my little touche on the catwalk

I'm too sexy for my too sexy for my too sexy for my

'Cos I'm a model you know what I mean
And I do my little turn on the catwalk
Yeah on the catwalk on the catwalk yeah
I shake my little touche on the catwalk

I'm too sexy for my cat too sexy for my cat
Poor pussy poor pussy cat
I'm too sexy for my love too sexy for my love
Love's going to leave me

And I'm too sexy for this song
(On a serious note, I believe he is also -- the man is two thousand years old, surely he has room for more than one theme song -- "Being Alive", from Sondheim's Company.)
Someone to hold you too close
Someone to hurt you too deep
Someone to sit in your chair
And ruin your sleep
And make you aware of being alive

Someone to need you too much
Someone to know you too well
Someone to pull you up short
And put you through hell
And give you support
For being alive

Make me alive, make me confused
Mock me with praise, let me be used
Vary my days;
But alone is alone, not alive.

Somebody hold me too close
Somebody force me to care
Somebody make me come through
I'll always be there
As frightened as you of being alive

Someone you have to let in
Someone whose feelings you spare
Someone who, like it or not
Will want you to share
A little, a lot
Of being alive

Make me alive, [etc.]

Somebody crowd me with love
Somebody force me to care
Somebody make me come through
I'll always be there
As frightened as you
To help us survive
Being alive

As an alternate, emo-friendly song for the Doctor, I'd suggest 'Sea Song' (Robert Wyatt;lyrics are from the liner notes of his album Rock Bottom ):

You look different every time
you come from the foam crested brine,
your skin shining softly in the
mooonlight.
Partly fish, partly porpoise, partly
baby sperm whale.
Am I yours, are you mine,
to play with?

Joking apart,
when you're drunk you're terrific,
when you're drunk I like you mostly
late at night, you're quite alright.
But I can't understand
the different you in the morning
when it's time to play at being
human for a while.
Please smile.

You'll be different in the spring, I know
you're a seasonal beast,
like the starfish that drift in with the tide.
So until your blood runs to meet
the next full moon,
your madness fits in nicely
with my own.
Your lunacy fits neatly with my own.
my very own.
You're not alone.

My song for immediately-post-Doomsday Rose is 'Susan' by Aimee Mann:

Oh, Susan, you were clued in
You knew just how this thing would go
A prognosis that was hopeless
From the very first domino
I guess I see it all in hindsight
I tried to keep perspective despite
The flash of the fuse, the smell of cordite

Now I'm in that place again
And I know he can't come in to get me
And someday he will live to regret me
Susan, I can see it now

Oh, Suzie--they get to me
They can really be wearying
But he threw me rope and buoy
Let me use his decoder ring
There must have been some kind of parade
We kissed for a while to see how it played
And pulled the pin on another grenade

Now I'm in that place again
And I know he can't come in to get me
And someday he will live to regret me
Suzie, I can see it now

Oh, Susan, the hope of fusion
Is that the halo will reappear
It may be pure illusion
But it's beautiful while it's here
I had some trouble with the goodbye
I checked my roman candle supply
And watched the vapor trail in the sky

But I'm in that place again
And I know he can't come in to get me
And someday he will live to regret me
Susan, I can see it now

I like Gridlock as a Paradise Towers capitalism thing with some stuff about faith in the mix. The Gods they invest in are absent, so it doesn't work for me as religious allegory. They specifically invest in state protection (cops, parliament) and it's absent, so it could be the death of social democracy and the need for faith. Or something.

Either way, no-one involved is omni - The Doctor needs granny expertise & couldn't have done anything without the Face of Boe and Hame. LottL has a more patronising and hierarchical version of that.

I'm very happy FoP broadened religious imagery a bit (was beginning to wonder if they were aware of other religious traditions) and kept it clearly Clarke's Law.

"The Great Historical Bum" is indeed a great fit for the Doctor. But there's also a filk (http://www.sff.net/people/jcbunnell/filk.htm) version called "Young Man Mulligan" that fits even better:

I was born about ten thousand years from now
When they landed on the moon, I showed them how
And with Goddard, Ley, and Campbell
On an Interstellar ramble
I'm the one who caught and cleaned and cooked the chow

That's just verse 1. (My arthritic fingers aren't up to typing in the whole thing.) It is *very* long and goes on to namecheck dozens of characters, novels, authors, and space pioneers. The voice throughout could definitely be the Doctor in a boastful mood.

I'm currently storyboarding this for a Nine & Ten music vid from Rose's POV.

You come from far away
With pictures in your eyes
Of coffeeshops and morning streets
In the blue and silent sunrise

But night is the cathedral
Where we recognized the sign
We strangers know each other now
As part of the whole design

Oh, hold me like a baby
That will not fall asleep
Curl me up inside you
And let me hear you through the heat

You are the jester of this courtyard
With a smile like a girl's
Distracted by the women
With the dimples and the curls

By the pretty and the mischievous
By the timid and the blessed
By the blowing skirts of ladies
Who promise to gather you to their breast

Oh, hold me like a baby...

You have hands of raining water
And that earring in your ear
The wisdom on your face
Denies the number of your years

With the fingers of the potter
And the laughing tale of the fool
The arranger of disorder
With your strange and simple rules

Yes now I've met me another spinner
Of strange and gauzy threads
With a long and slender body
And a bump upon the head

Oh, hold me like a baby...

With a long and slender body
And the sweetest softest hands
And we'll blow away forever soon
And go on to different lands

And please do not ever look for me
But with me you will stay
And you will hear yourself in song
Blowing by one day

Oh, hold me like a baby...

Song for the Doctor: Few Days

Date: 2008-05-16 08:57 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] starmalachite.livejournal.com
Traditional, rewritten by Leslie Fish

This song goes back to at least the 1850s and was originally about the life of a tramp. Fish rewrote it surprisingly little to make it about a generic cosmic wanderer. AFAIK, she's not a Who fan.

Alas, the albums this appears on are all thoroughly OOP. If anyone is interested, I can share an mp3.

I can’t stay in these diggings long – few days, few days
I can’t stay in these diggings long, and I am going home

I’ll peg my tent on this campground – few...
To give my demons one more round, and...

From sun to sun I’m made to tread...
The open sky my only bed...

How little did my mother dream...
That I would sail on Time’s long stream...

The world I knew is ages gone...
And I must keep on keeping on...

All others to their loves may cling...
While I must wander, learn & sing...

There is no world can hold me long...
Till every world has heard my song...

Of all the worlds & times I know...
I’ll sing the truth before I go...

My sky is bound by spinning stars...
The cruelest prison has no bars...

Song for Jack: Not While I'm Around

From: [identity profile] starmalachite.livejournal.com
by Stephen Sondheim (from Sweeney Todd)

To me, this is *very* Jack, especially where the Doctor's concerned.

Nothing's gonna harm you
Not while I'm around
Nothing's gonna harm you
No sir, not while I'm around
Demons are prowling everywhere
Nowadays
I'll send 'em howling, I don't care
I got ways

No one's gonna hurt you
No one's gonna dare
Others can desert you
Not to worry, whistle, I'll be there

Demons'll charm you with a smile, for a while
But in time, nothing can harm you
Not while I'm around

Being close and being clever, ain't like being true
I don't need to – I would never hide a thing from you
Like some

No one's gonna hurt you
No one's gonna dare
Others can desert you
Not to worry, whistle, I'll be there

Demons'll charm you with a smile, for a while
But in time, nothin' can harm you
Not while I'm around.

This was originally a Star Trek song for Christine Chapel and her unrequited love for Spock. But except for a single line, it fits Sarah (up to "School Reunion", anyway) perfectly.

Again, as with "Few Days," all recordings are OOP but an mp3 could be shared on request.

CHORUS:
When will you turn & believe what I offer you?
I can’t stop loving for all you deny
Not all the stars can undo that reality
When will you turn & believe me?

You keep your heart locked out where shadows begin
And I pace ‘round the walls crying over again,
“Please open the gate, love, & let me come in”
When will you turn & believe me?
CHORUS:

I’ve seen you as lonely as the stars where we fly
Yet you’ll never admit you’re as lonely as I
Or that words from the heart are not always a lie
When will you turn & believe me?
CHORUS:

I know that I’ve nothing to gain on this ride
But I’ve gone beyond hope & I’ve gone beyond pride
All I expect is to stand at your side
When will you turn & believe me?
CHORUS:

Our worlds are as different as truth from a dream
As our blood that mismatches in scarlet & green
But still you’re the best thing that I’ve ever seen
When will you turn & believe me?
CHORUS:

Terribly cliched but I always associate 'Another Girl, Another Planet' with Doctor Who. Not sure which character though.

Always flirt with death
I could kill but I don't care about it
I can face your threats
Stand up tall and scream and shout about it

I think I'm on another world with you
I'm on another planet with you

You always get under my skin
I don't find it irritating
You always play to win
I don't need rehabilitating

Another girl, another planet
Another girl, another planet

Space travel's in my blood
And there ain't nothing I can do about it
Long journeys wear me out but
Oh god, you know we won't live without it

Another girl is loving you now
Another planet forever holding you down
Another planet
