Yes, this is a very effective technique, and not all that new. I first encountered it some 10 years ago, in Nashville, when NOW sponsored a Pledge-A-Picket campaign to raise money for Planned Parenthood from an annual anti-choice march. Oddly enough, after a couple of years in which the pledge drive was well-publicized, the march just... quietly went away. :)
