Variations on a Theme - the Shining

Cut for spoilers for the 1977 book by King, the 1980 Kubrick movie, and the 1997 miniseries, which are more different than I expected. But does anyone not know what Redrum is? )

I have no great final pronouncements - I just thought it was interesting to stack up three tellings of the same story. Unlike fairy tales, there was a set version of The Shining, and the author is alive to tweak it as he wishes. This is the result so far. They all seem to have some form of "officialdom" - King doesn't decry the Kubrick movie, he appears in cameo in the miniseries (look at the band leader), and he wrote the book.

In other news, have discovered the great pleasures that can be obtained with a cat and a treadmill. Micky likes to lie on the treadmill. I often can't resist the urge to turn it on and watch her proceed slowly backwards with a look of mingled concern and confusion until she lands with a gentle "thump" at the other end and runs off, pretending she meant to do that. That I've been able to do this more than once is proof that I'm not horrifically traumatizing her.

But last night, it was extra special, because it was the first time she's sprawled on it in its current location, with the very end under a table. As the motor rumbled to life she stood up and started assessing her options. As she reached the end, her tail brushed against the outer leg of the table and she did a stiff-legged little hop forward to get away from this new indignity. However, the treadmill was still on, bringing her right back and so we went... hop, rumble, hop, rumble, hop, rumble, hop until M and I were in hysterics and Micky finally jumped off the side.

Yes, it was mean... but she was still lying across the thing this morning, so I doubt she was scarred for life.

PS - the keychain was explained. It was a door prize for joining the Halloween cookoff.
