No sooner do I post about a new fandom, than I come online and find out that an old fan acquaintance has died. I didn't even know Susan Garrett was ill.
I remember her from so many Media*Wests. Running to her table to pick up a Not The MediaWest Program. (I still have every one I ever got.) Talking about fandoms. After all the years of her being a free-floating member of fan culture, pointing and laughing when she got sucked into Forever Knight bigtime.
Babbling on the phone when she sent me a huge file of obscure materials on a star that were at least 15 years old when I tipped into an old and highly dated fandom.
Congratulating her when she sold her Forever Knight book, and razzing her... while asking for her autograph.
Goodbye, Susan. You were a BNF from when that wasn't an insult; when you got "big" by aiding fandom and fans - so many fandoms, so many, many fans - and you were always generous, fair, even-keeled, and enthusiastic.
We didn't see each other but 4 days a year, but oh, how I'm going to miss
that smile.
