Some Pre-Premiere Sherlock Stuff (no direct spoilers)

I cannot stop rewinding this video of Study in Pink dubbed in different languages

I haven't learned all the 4-letter abbreviations for the canonical stories, but I endorse this movement to use 4-letter abbreviations for Sherlock episodes (SPOILERS for S2 titles, which are plot spoilers themselves). PINK, BANK, and GAME are quite clear regarding the S1 episodes. This scheme has the virtue of making at least the first acronym for S2 non-spoilery, on account of it doesn't map to anything known... in fact, probably makes no sense out of context.

I promise the spoilerphobes that I will be using these acronyms as I talk about the episodes, keeping *only* the acronym above the cut... but absolute spoilerphobes may want to use the "do not show me this tag" feature on my LJ on account of it's not my fault they put spoilers in the title and at least one will be REALLY obvious even reduced to 4 letters!

I don't understand people who get upset about being spoiled for episode titles on shows. That's just over the top, as far as I can see.

Normally I'd agree, but in this case the titles - like "Dalek" and "They Just Keep Killing Suzie" - contain explicit plot spoilers. And I know there's at least one person on the flist who is avoiding plot spoilers like the plague, so I'm trying to give her the warning/tools she needs to not have her enjoyment spoiled by me, if not by Moffat & Gatiss.

Well you're going to know the spoiler as soon as you start watching and see the title anyway, so what difference does it make?

Of course, this doesn't take account of episode titles which are apparently spoilery but in fact are misdirections - cf The Doctor's Wife.

True, but but in the narrow case of Sherlock the show, it looks like there isn't any misdirection.

Having read some hige threads about sexism in a completely different online culturenover the last few days, I think I'm mostly trying to show where I'm drawing the line so that the person I'm thinking of knows what is or isn't a "safe space" by her standards. It's about spoilers rather than sexism, but safe spaces are at the top of my mind.

Also, to propogate what I think is a really cool nomenclature, one that seems to fit Sherlock back into the culture surrounding its source material.

Hmm. It just seems a bit pointless getting upset about Sherlock spoilers, given how long the canon's been around - I mean, even a non-fan like *me* knows what a lot of the stories are called, and even what some of them are about.

I can see it... TBH, I'm really nervous about something in tonight's episode, and had I not known about it in advance, I wouldn't have spent five days going "No, seriously? That's got to be wrong. That in No Way is..."

Not that I'm not expecting to squee madly when I see it. But there may be some bitching tonight.

i totally approve of four-letter abbreviations for all canon spin-offs! mary russell fandom does it, so can sherlock! of course, i have no idea how one will be able to come up with a distinct four-letter abbreviation for two of the titles, since they're SO close to the originals, but i'm sure fandom will find a way.

also i approve of anything that will keep people from abbreviating a study in scarlet as ASiS. IT'S JUST WRONG, DAMMIT.

The link compares 2 of the 3 new acronyms to canon, which I found really handy. I'm assuming that because Sherlock title 3 bears no words in common with the story title it comes from, there isn't going to be the possibility of overlap. I'm especially fond of what's been done with title 2, which would be the most problematic in regard to words in common.
