Three tidbits re: Elementary

1) Elementary's first season will come out on DVD August 27.

2) According to Blogtor Who, there's going to be a SherlockBBC con in Birmingham. Which some incredible moron has titled "Elementary." Because that won't cause any confusion (or come across like the start of a pissing contest) *at all.*

3) Because I don't think I've said this in public, Elementary fans can breathe a sigh of relief that I'm not going to be harshing the squee over S2 because I won't be watching S2. I watched S1 through because I'd pitched several articles about aspects of *all* the 21st C interpretations and thus needed to talk in an informed manner about Elementary as much as the Ritchie movies and BBC.

If the ratings stay the way they are, the show will run for quite a few seasons. I don't begrudge that. May your fandom continue to make you happy.

Where Elementary has run only on Sky Living, and while it's had good ratings for Sky, but been outperformed by a factor of 7-1 in ratings by Sherlock.

I don't think it's a brilliant move by the promoters of the conference, mind you (and I've no intention of attending, since it's a particular type of con I'm not engaged about), but I think calling it moronic is pushing it given that it's a UK convention and Elementary has made very little mark over here so far.

But how often does the word Elementary even show up in Sherlock? I'm straining to think of an instance. As its not a word that's particularly associated with the show and is the title of a vaguely associated series that has aired there, if not as popularly, and gotten Guardian press recently, I think the name is still misleading at best.

"Elementary, my dear Watson" is one of the most famous quotations which was never actually said by Sherlock Holmes; it's unreasonable to claim that it's the exclusive property of ABC.

If it were a canon/Victorian con, I'd agree with you, especially as that phrase does show up a LOT in Victorian-era adaptations & pastiches, including the Ritchie movies. Victorian Holmes unquestionably had it first. Victorian Holmes has every right to keep using it.

But it doesn't show up at all in Sherlock and that's what I'm reacting to. I don't remember Sherlock BBC using "elementary," much less "Elementary my dear John." They've named a Sherlock BBC con with the one word not associated with Sherlock BBC -- but identified with the other modernization.
