Joss Whedon's Much Ado

[livejournal.com profile] suricattus is right; this plot makes more sense when you think of the whole thing being a very drunken weekend party.

There are two very lovely bits of business unique to this version. In no other production have I seen:

1) The Friar being pissed at Leonato. There's a nice little snap of anger while he tells Leo to calm down and try the fake death scheme.

2) Claudio: "I'll hold my mind, were she an Ethiope." Benedict, silently *Oh, fuck no! wince*

Adored this version. Much as I loved Kenny and Enmma and what they did with it, this is just better!

I don't know of one is metrically better than the other to me, but. Really like the compare/contrast. Next time you watch it, though, LOOK at the amount of alcohol they're all consuming!

I must find out if this is available over here...

And talking of Shakespeare - have you caught up with "Muse of Fire: A Shakespearean Road Movie" yet? It aired on BBC 4 on Thursday night and is a pretty fascinating documentary, made on a shoe string by two young actors, Dan and Giles, who investigate why Shakespeare's language seems to terrify almost everyone. It features interviews with Mark Rylance, Judi Dench, Ian McKellan, Michael Gambon, Ben Kingsley, Fiona Shaw, Zoe Wannamaker, Baz Luhrman (sp?) and Harold Bloom amongst others. If you haven't see it yet and want to, let me know.

I hadn't heard of that at all! I'll have to see if I can find it.

It was really good. Interestingly, every single actor, young or old, to whom they spoke, admitted to fear of Shakespeare - except Judi Dench.

Oh - and Joss' Much Ado IS out on DVD over here - and I have a birthday next week, so I'm going to get it for my birthday...
