(no subject)

I had been planning on going to see Becoming Jane at the cheap show today, but once I got home in the blessed air conditioning, there was just no way I was going back out into that heat again for any reason!

Did go to the Rennfaire. I seem to have left just as things got exciting - a fire truck, all sirens going, passed me on the way out and I saw another one plus an ambulance heading in that general direction. Does anyone know what happened?

It's funny... the minute I'm home and clean, I start thinking about how bad my head and stomach still feel. While I was *at* faire, all I could think of was how hot I was and if I was getting enough to drink. (Depending on the thermometer, it's either in the very high 90s or up at 100, and it's so humid that all the windows were fogged this morning.) Well, the trip neither killed nor cured me, and I got to do the shopping I wanted and see a couple of the shows I wanted to see.

Now that I can say I've done faire on opening day, however, I don't feel any need to go back while it's still this brutally hot!

Conveniently, Amazon has just delivered my Austen-o-rama; the Greer Garson, Keira Knightly, and Colin Firth Pride and Prejudices. So I might miss Miss Hathaway becoming Jane, but I'll still get that Austen flair.

It's absolutely brutal here in Baltimore. Hottest day I've ever seen, even in all my years of living in the DC area. The only relief was on the water taxi and the air conditioned shops/malls. I definitely made sure I had enough fluids. If I'd only come a few days earlier, the weather would have been heavenly... *sighs*

I loved Andrew Davies' adaptation of Pride and Prejudice with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth and David Bamber and the rest of the cast who were all perfect in every way for their roles in a production that was perfect in every way. And I say that as a heretic who never especially enjoyed the book.

I'm a mutant who isn't all that fond of that version (it's generally everyone's favorite). It has some great moments and it is a lot closer to the book than many others, but it also throws in gratuitous things, like the bit about Darcy taking a dip just before he sees Elizabeth again. It makes that whole scene come across less as "I have learned more about your character and have grown to like you" and a little too "Now that I've seen your package I'm reassessing." It's the best, though, although I have a sneaking fondness for many aspects of the Kiera one.

I like the little bits that the Greer version tosses in of Eliza dinging Darcy (and also the new bit about Bingley setting down his sister for laughing at the Bennett disgrace) but I don't like the unexpected turnabout of Lady Catherine.

I think Kiera makes a good Elizabeth because she's all fine eyes and not a particularly stylish face or figure and that movie did well with showing the different social statuses, but they made an utter mess of some of the scenes that they seem to have reset just because they could.

and I like the singing in Bride and Prejudice, even though the trite lyrics are an utter offense to Austen

*sigh* Basically, my perfect version hasn't been made yet, although I do rather wish I could take all of them and throw them in a blender and pick out the good bits.

And then there was something done in the 80s that managed to get all the words and NONE of the humor at all. *facepalm*

Interesting.

Wouldn't that be more of a horror movie? ;-)

Ooo... I know you probably prefer proper Bollywood movies but have you seen Mistress of Spices? I only ask because your mention of B&P reminded me of the film. Some of the reviews I've seen claim it tackles Indian immigration to the US with some subtlety and... I can't quite imagine it. In case you don't know the book, it's not wholly dissimilar to Chocolat. /random questioning

Now I'm half-tempted to try it in a crackfic sort of way.

I haven't seen Mistress of Spices *pops open new tab to add it to Netflix queue* but I'm hardly a snob about "proper" Bollywood movies. Not when my top two favorites are Lagaan - and The Guru!
