Fred Throws in His $.02

For those who've lived in blissful ignorance, Andy Schlafly - yeah, Phyllis of "The ERA takes away our female privileges" son - has decided that Liberal bias has become the single biggest distortion in modern Bible translations. (This was announced on Conservapedia, because facts and reality also, as Stephen Colbert has pointed out, have a well-known liberal bias.) The new Bible will "Exclude Later-Inserted Liberal Passages," provide a "Framework against Liberal Bias," and (my personal favorite), "Express Free Market Parables."

I'm guessing that bit about not being able to worship mammon and God is a late-inserted liberal passage.

There's been a lot of discussion on this over at [livejournal.com profile] jonquil's on LJ and Dreamweaver (I recommend a look, they're highly entertaining posts) and I first heard about it from Pharyngula, but I've been waiting impatiently for Fred the Slactivist, the liberal evangelical minister who's been eviscerating Left Behind, to discover this and throw in his $.02. The post went up today:

The satirist and the extremist are thus in a kind of footrace. And, as the Conservative Bible Project demonstrates, the extremists these days are winning. They're getting there first -- beating any would-be satirist to the finish line and the punch line.

*facepalm*

THANK YOU! I've been reloading Slacktivist for a couple of days, waiting for him to weigh in!

I'm staggered it's taken him this long, and that he didn't do a full shred on it. Yet. I'm hoping he'll give it the Left Behind treatment, but he's probably rocking in a corner at the very idea of what they're doing.

You mean this isn't parody? That site is so ludicrous that I couldn't possibly take it seriously.

And how is 'government' a liberal word?

Thanks for linking to this insanity to remind me once again why I'm so happy not to live in the US...

as i said the other time i replied about this (to sff_corgi)

i find it very sad ANY time the Bible is re worked to conform to someone's politics.
whether it was being re worked to conform to King Johns anti witch /heresy paranoia.... being re worked to make all t he language "inclusive" re worked to imply vegetarianism.. or this.

Oooohhh...

I only knew that it was a moronic conservative (as opposed to the otherwise perfectly respectable conservatives that many of us may happen to know) - I didn't realize that it was a special moronic conservative. At least he comes by it "honestly (please note the quote marks).

Meh. Poe's Law is nothing new, and I've been making the same point regarding headlines from The Onion for years now, in terms of genuine human stupidity making attempted parodies of the same nearly impossible. After all, parody is about taking things to their more absurd extremes, and as Einstein noted, human stupidity is infinite, so how do you amplify infinity???

[identity profile] box-in-the-box.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
You mean this isn't parody?

HA HA HA POE'S LAW

[identity profile] box-in-the-box.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
... Aaaand having actually checked the link, I see that he acknowledges these facts himself, thereby rendering my post redundant.

I don't think he's finished yet, either. I love Slacktivist!

So, if they're reworking the Bible to fit neocon/Christianist viewpoints, does that mean the moneychangers are now more than welcome at the temple and please take advantage of our tax-free status?

[identity profile] neadods.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
He's so insane that he's a parody... but he himself and a bunch of the people working with him are dead serious.

Government is a liberal word because it is a tenant of conservatism that the gov't is never ever effective and should be reduced as small as possible.

*wipes off the monitor*

[identity profile] neadods.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, Slactivist is well aware of Poe's Law; he talks about it as he shreds Left Behind.

There was a vegetarianism Bible? Missed that one.
