I once wrote a paper suggesting that Holmes doesn't trust women because his nanny-- the only "mother" he would have known-- left for another job when he was small. It happened a lot in his social class, and some people never got over it. He can appreciate women, but he doesn't think he understands them, and he's not getting emotionally involved again.
