So, one of the things on my list of Things To Do is to update iTunes, the ipod touch (Tubso), and ipad (Bissonomy).
The iTunes part went fine. As for the devices...
Normally I do this by plugging in the device, clicking "download and update" and coming back in about half an hour.
This time, I come back and find out that updating Tubso has failed. Somewhere along the line, Windows jumped in and said that the sofware update hadn't passed Windows Logo testing.
And now Tubso's DEAD. I can't reboot it because it's gone into recovery mode. I can't get it connected to iTunes to recover, because every time I try to reconnect it to the computer, the computer says that the new hardware connection failed and so iTunes can't see it. I've tried forcing a connection with the Add Hardware command (picking "I will choose driver/Apple/Recovery mode device), that's not getting through either.
Rebooting the computer only means that I have to wait a few minutes before I repeat pounding my head against the wall and swearing.
I've tried plugging in Bissonomy (the ipad) and Windows recognizes new hardware... then asks me what software I want to connect my new "camera" to (Biss is first generation; no camera). I used to get that window asking me if I wanted Windows Player to play the music on it; now it wants MS Word to download a photo from the collection.) So I downloaded a photo to MS word to make it happy, shut down Word...
Windows Explorer shows a camera marked "Apple iPad." Itunes does not recognize Bissonomy even when I have it connected and run diagnostics on it. As far as Windows is concerned, it's a camera, which means iTunes doesn't care. The only upside here is that the ipad hasn't locked up like Tubso has.
The very big downside is that I can't update either one anymore.
Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot? WTF has gone on here? How do I fix it? Should I just bail and move everything to a different, hopefully less f-ed up computer? (While I haven't tried moving my library yet, I have consolidated it and it is stored on an external drive, so I should be able to shift it elsewhere.)
Advice gratefully taken. That said? "You should have an Apple computer" is not actually advice, so don't go there.
ETA: I have successfully updated the ipod shuffle without any of this nonsense. It appears to be an issue between Windows/iTunes and the more complex machinery.
