I've had a lot of trouble being motivated to do much of anything these days. I blamed much on the weather - it is dark, cold, and wet, which makes me just want to curl up with a good book, and some I've blamed on the good book itself, because Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore continues to be a fun read. (Despite the dual complaints at Amazon that there is no Big Evil to fight and that the characters weren't, and I quote exactly, "fully flushed.")

But I think I've missed the depressive factor, and it's not due to the drippy weather. The entropy death of my beloved yarn store is accellerating, and I'm not being given time to mourn. I just received a notice that might as well have read "Knit Night As You Knew It Is Dead." There will be a gathering, I'm sure - there was an almost protest circle sitting at the table and pulling out the pointy sticks on the first day of the sale. Despite the proprietarily grinning interloper in the suit, we are not giving up our yarn home easily.

But my personal "date night" of doing things at home, taking myself out to dinner, and then sitting and knitting? Not happening. Probably happening in reverse order, actually - I'll go straight to the store after work to see what fresh hell this is, knit for a bit (if I can without crying), pick up dinner, and then go home.

Rumor has it that there's a knitting circle at Wegman's but that it's "cliquey." Not a big inducement, that.

Is it the weather, the sale, or the knowledge that I've permanently lost my "treat night" out that's knocking the knees out from under me? Does the answer matter, when all of it's happening regardless?

Probably a combination of all three to some greater or lesser extent.

*hugs*

Is there any chance that the Knit Night regulars could select a new venue, such as a coffee shop?

I'd agree that it's probably a combination of all three.

I sympathize on losing the yarn shop. Both of the needlework shops nearest me have either a) closed (Scarlet Thread) or b) switched to needlepoint as the customers grew older, leaving the cross stitcher out for anything aside from floss. Going all the way down to R1/Woodlawn is not my idea of fun, no matter how much I love that shop. I've never found a stitching/needlework group around me either so it's me and the tv usually.

Closest I'm going through now is the loss of the B&N at Union Station. On the one hand, it's just a big chain bookstore, but I enjoyed going there on my lunch hour. It makes going digital decision a little easier to justify in my head.

And if there isn't a conveniently-handy cafe or coffee-shop, why don't you invite folks to our house for a wednesday night knit-night? There's nothing that says is HAS to be at a commercial venue. I know some folks might be hesitant to come to a relative stranger's house, but they're more likely to come in a pack than by themselves.

And if you hold a regular knitting gathering, it'll give me an excuse to knit more, too. :-)
