Hello world - here I am. Since my life is as boring as just about everyone else's, and I have email circles I can dump my personal life onto, this journal is going to be mostly reviews and commentary.

Topics to be covered publicly, listed in no particular order:

- Books. Possibly the most influential thing in my life; I'm more likely to skip a meal than pass up a good book. My tastes are eclectic to the extreme - put it this way, I am currently reading "Lost in a Good Book" (SF fantasy about classic literature) and "Stiff!" (nonfiction about the uses of corpses). That I find both equally entertaining tells you a lot about my character!

- Movies. I don't watch a lot of them, but I always have an opinion when I do...

- Theater. I usher at the DC Shakespeare Theater (thank you for getting me into that, Stratfordbabe!) and take an annual trip up to Stratford, Canada, for their festival.

- Television. There won't be a lot of reviews of specific shows, I'm not doing episode guides or anything, but there are some shows or episodes which require more than passive participation.

Topics to be covered under "Friends Only" (unless I find something really profound to say):

- Fan Culture. I've been active as a science fiction/fantasy fan since Trek America 1976. I work at a couple of the local conventions (tech crew for one, concom for the other), I hit most of the Worldcons that happen on my coast, and I haven't missed a Media*West since they were in the old hotel.

- Gardening. I have almost 1/3 of an acre of land, much of which has gone over to weeds. I'm currently reclaiming it plot by plot. Since I know nothing about gardening except "I like roses" this is getting... educational. At the moment it's also itchy - a certain nasty 3-leafed vine has established itself when I wasn't looking!

- Wenches, Pirates, and Rogues (oh my!) There's a thriving underculture at your local Renaissance Festival, and I've tossed myself headlong into it. Since a fair number of the local Faire Folk read my journal, I'm going to have bits about TeamWench's works.

Oh, and every now and then,

- The First Christian Mission to Hawaii. It's my latest research project, and hopefully will spawn a series of magazine articles and at least one book. There's lots of fertile ground here - religious fervor, hypocrisy, personal conflict, economics, women's rights, political intrigue, social revision... everything James Michner told you was wrong!

So that's what you're in for. Hope you like it!
