2004's Gonna Be Good
Dec. 29th, 2003 09:51 amI can feel it in my bones. This is going to be a good year. I'm happy about my new job. I'm happy about my reentry into Beast fandom. (I have a list of 45 zines I wanted to get from my long absence, and have already gotten 8! Go me!) I'm... adjusting... to the new hair.
And, as I do every year,
( a series of resolutions. )
And on other news, I had an epiphany while reading LotR. It's very... biblical. (I know, not a huge surprise.) But more so than mythological or even civics-history-ish. It's full of people saying things like "I opened my heart to..." and descriptions like "nobility sat on his brow," has huge chunks of poetry in it, keeps taking time to digress about lineage and/or history, and pretty much boils down to how the Good Vs Evil smackdown will be accomplished. Not to meniton how there's much Manly Affection and Goodwill for My Warrior Brother everywhere while the women pretty much don't exist.
When I read it back in grade school I didn't have the experience to realize that, but now it's about all I can see. I'm probably going to rot in hell if I say that I find Harry Potter easier/faster to read, but Tolkein's style is pretty stiff if poetic, particularly in comparison to the modern One Story That Will Bring Them All And At Bookstores Bind Them.
