May the SF gods bless Peter Jackson for livening up the world of LotR fandom, and may they bless [livejournal.com profile] mollyringwraith for finding/writing the best of the parodies for the LJ folk. In this case, [livejournal.com profile] glimmerschiefer's LotR as Frodo's Graduate school exercise - "a metallurgical and volcanological study of Mount Doom." *

Part the first
and The rest.

Beyond priceless. A huge hunk ripped from "Field Notebook 2":

"Well. Interesting committee meeting.

Besides the usual suspects (that is, my committee: Professor Gandalf and Professor Elrond, plus Dr. Strider and my emeritus Uncle Bilbo, who was involved in this research during his active career), there were quite a few visiting scholars at my committee meeting. Representatives were there from Mirkwood University, the Lonely Mountain School of Mines and Technology, and even the Gondor Institute of Technology, as well as all the various Elvish research institutes.

At first, it seemed as if I was going to get off lightly – as one would expect from such a collection of expertise, my committee and the visiting scholars spent a great deal of time arguing with one another about my research. I was called on to explain my part in the work, but the committee soon gave up questioning me on my methods and began debating the potential future course of the research amongst themselves. The debate grew quite heated: there was no agreement about the best future course of the research, although the representative from GIT questioned the effectiveness of my proposed methods, and felt my research might be better conducted in his labs. And apparently someone who once participated in this research is making moves to get into it again: a strange character with a 500-year history of hanging around graduate seminars eating free sushi has left Mirkwood University and may have approached the government in search of funding.

Most disturbingly, I discovered that my research has political ramifications beyond the bounds of my dissertation. The Lonely Mtn School of Mines and Technology has received visitors from the state Commission on Higher Education. They have heard rumors about research along the lines of the Ring project, and appear to want to interfere with it. The department head has told them that their interference is a violation of academic freedom, but they appear to have the backing of the governor on this one, and they don't want to risk getting their budget cut.

And perhaps the worst news is that the top member of Gandalf's collaborative research group, Dr. Saruman, appears to want to run for governor himself.

This project is looking worse and worse. However, when the debate appeared about to come to blows, I could not help reminding the committee that it was, in fact, my dissertation that they were discussing, and that I intended to complete it."

Run, run, run over to the LJ and read it all.

* Have kept cutting and pasting from original but it tells me "bad username." I don't think s/he's bad at all - but the name is glimmerschiefer.
