Dad again.

Saw Dad for the first time today. Yay! He was awfully withdrawn - he kept watching TV when I came in, not wanting to talk. Which is *highly* unusual for him, but considering how often I've done similar things to him, I guess I had it coming.

He's getting a little more energy, although R and I were at him to keep up his exercises so he could go home. And he says that food is beginning to taste better.

That's the good news. As for the bad...

Remember that heart attack? The "oh, he just went off his meds" mild one?

Turns out not.

Turns out the only reason, and the Dr. stressed ONLY reason he didn't die right there of a massive coronary was because he was already at the hospital and some of his surgical team was 2 doors down. That if he had been at home, no matter how close we live to the hospital (about a 10 minute walk) the ambulance would have not made it in time.

And he got one because he had it coming, basically. It wasn't going off the meds, he was predisposed and his cardio lottery number came up.

Have I ever mentioned that his father died of a massive unheralded coronary? No murmurs, no pains, no smaller attacks, just BAM! down in the fields one day. My parents had to delay their wedding for the mourning period. So the doctors are like "you're forgetting about the insulin problem soon, but your heartbeats are numbered. Act like it." They caught it without damage... this time.

So I did a little shopping on the way home, getting pretty much the entire line of American Heart Assn. cookbooks. Two for Mother, who wants them for Christmas. One for my brother, who is sitting up and taking note that he may have inherited something aside from an unusual first name. And one for me, 'cause I'm overweight, out of shape, and am also related to these men...

The faintly good news is their announcement of the "polydiet" in the news. Fish. Vegetables. Fruit. Wine. Almonds. Garlic. Dark chocolate. I could easily live with this.
