Cranky

Remember those 14 boxes and miscellaneous items that I left out for charity and felt so virtuous about?

They were never picked up. I was called (twice!) and reminded to put them out by 7am on Monday, and that's what I did.

When I got home, that's where they all still were - sitting on the side porch. Which hadn't proven to be good long-term protection against the rain. So instead of donating a bunch of useful stuff to charity, I'm going to be dragging a lot of now-useless stuff down to the corner next trash day.

I checked the website, but found no contact information for anyone doing pickups. Next time they call me for a donation, they're going to get an earful instead.

Not a happy camper at work either; feeling like my supervisor has crossed the line from "uberbusy but will get back to me" to "blowing me off until I make a stink." Am taking steps to complain in channels, although which channels is up for some discussion (one of my friends says "take it to HR," while another says "take it to his boss.")

But there is one bright spot. I have discovered Dannon La Creme strawberry yogurt with chocolate pieces.

The second mission had a single woman on it, Betsy Stockton. Turns out she was a former slave. During her 3 years in Hawaii, she founded a school for farmers, so she was accepted as a proficient teacher.

ETA: I can't use this because it's an undated clip from a diary, but this quote amused me. From the Chamberlain diary of the trip to Hawaii:
When it is calm almost all hands frequently go in swimming; we experience no inconvenience in it, only the women are afraid the sharks will catch their husbands.
