In another in a series of "I post on LJ, therefore I am" postings, a series of random comments on assorted things going on in my life:

A Body at Rest Tends to Remain at Rest )

Still can't make up my mind about XM radio, though, particularly vs buying an MP3 player. Or just buying music off of Itunes and burning my own CDs.

The search for the perfect purse continues, shifted to ebay since all the stuff I've seen in the stores is the wrong size, ugly, poorly configured, or all of the above. Ditto the search for the perfect calendar. Why do they make the binders for the daytimers etc so padded? Honestly, the binder alone is twice the size of the stuff it holds, now what's the point of that?

Am going to bag it all and watch Bollywood tonight. Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin has arrived from Netflix. That's the very cool thing about Netflix. If it weren't for them, I wouldn't be able to dip my toes in Bollywood fandom.

I'm looking for movie suggestions. Note that while Shahrukh Khan and Ajay Devgan are scenic as all get-out, what I'm really looking for is your basic romantic musical comedy. I figure if Hollywood won't give 'em to me, I'll get 'em from Bollywood.

Have seen )

Have in Netflix Queue )

Have bought (but not yet watched):
Oh, argh, can't find the title. The one set in NYC.

Did not like Monsoon Wedding; I got bored about 45 minutes in and gave up.

So - what else belongs on the list?

ETA: Bonus points if someone can tell me what that Bollywood movie was that got clipped in Buffy. All I saw was a man in a gaudy turban watching the feet of dancing women.

I've written before about the power of words. Words are a powerful persuader, literally capable of bending reality.

For example - Say someone is reading a book. You ask what the book is. Catalog your own reactions to these answers:

"It's a romance."
"It's a social satire."
"It's chicklit."
"It's a literary classic."

She could just say "I'm reading Pride and Prejudice," but every statement above is equally true. And every statement above gets a different response from the listener.

Why am I ranting about this right now? Because of this post of Starcat's, which links in turn to a variety of other blogs covering the issue. I'll let you follow the links. In the meantime, I ask you no matter what your political leanings, would you be upset and want to follow the story if you read the headline "THIRD TIME'S THE CHARM - PEDOPHILE RUN OUT OF TWO CHURCHES FOR SEXUAL MISCONDUCT STARTS CHILDREN'S MINISTRY"? How about "CHILD MOLESTER RUNS TEEN GROUP, HAS DAILY UNDERWEAR INSPECTIONS"?

Get your blood boiling? Of course. There is just no way anybody can look at those headlines and think "those kids have it coming" or "Who cares?"

So why the hell are we running namby-pamby headlinges that let people blow off the story? )
