I'm getting into audio books in a big way. This is odd, because before this year I was pretty anti-audio; if I wanted to read a book, I wanted to READ the book. But now that I'm swimming in books to be read, I've discovered how much audio material I can get through in my car during my normal commute, and my Teaching Company habit is getting more expensive than crack, it seemed like a good time to give audiobooks a whirl.

Besides, no matter how many times I tried to listen to the prof in the latest Teaching Co. class, he put my teeth to sleep and was uninformative to boot. Guh.

So I got extravagant and went out and bought the Narnia set, mostly because I'd buy The 1985 Toadsuck AK Yellow Pages on CD if they were read by Michael York, Kenneth Branagh, Derek Jacobi, and Patrick Stewart. I rearranged the books back to their proper order and started listening this morning with York's Lion, Witch and Wardrobe. Not bad, but when he saw fit to give Mr. Tumnus a broad Irish accent I almost ran off the road.

On the political side of things, I'm still waiting for someone in mainstream media to ask the blatently obvious question "If the only people the Administration is spying on are talking to known terrorists, why do they think that FISA wouldn't grant legal permission for a warrant?" Followed up by "If the only reason is 'onerous paperwork,' surely you could cut the billions going to Iraq by the rate of one GS3's salary and have them fill out the forms for you."

And The Separation of Church and State quiz. I may have only gotten 3/4 of the lit questions right, but I nailed this one 100%.

ETA: A kid and his father have filed a federal lawsuit claiming sex discrimination against boys because "The system is designed to the disadvantage of males," Anglin told The Boston Globe. "From the elementary level, they establish a philosophy that if you sit down, follow orders and listen to what they say, you'll do well and get good grades. Men naturally rebel against this."

My reaction: What, boys are naturally discriminated against because they inevitably act out and break the rules? So there has never been any army historically male-dominated navy rule-oriented air force group marines which SEALS viciously punishes rule-breaking and rewards green berets obedience to hierarchy. Because men just don't do that sort of thing; it isn't manly.

[livejournal.com profile] filkertom saw it first. Bush has nominated three judges for vacant federal judgeships. Routine, right? Except that one of them is the lead prosecutor of the Abramoff case. Who has, of course, instantly stepped down to avoid conflict of interest.

Well, isn't that convenient for the Administration to remove the head of a group investigating the Administration, and right after a plea bargain offering to name names too?

Type "Abramoff prosecutor" in google news and pick the link of your choice; there are quite a lot.
