Not a bad weekend. Saturday was Chort's pirate feast and a rowdy good time with plentiful food was had by all. Sunday I read review books while downloading music... not as fun as knitting while watching movies, but at least I got necessary things done.

I've checked the weather (cold but not freezing; low chance of precipitation), got the leave, and made the announcement - QuiltFest, here I come! [livejournal.com profile] tchwrtr, still with me?

In other news, it looks like the luck scales are balancing with equal amounts of good and bad. Best Buy and Conlan Press both issued their refunds/rebates and Ikea sent me the wardrobe. Good. However, it's now looking like all the cats have caught ringworm. Bad. And I still haven't heard about the job. Nervewracking.

Oh, and:

Dear Author:

I hope between the publication of the ARC and the actual book, the fatal line "The first new book by an author who likes Terry Pratchett, Carl Hiaasen, and P.G. Wodehouse" disappears. While you get points for not letting your publicist say you actually wrote like them (because no matter what publicists say, NOBODY actually writes like them) this still sets a bar that no first author could jump.

I still can't decide if it's a point in your favor that you didn't even try to make that jump - more like walked straight under the bar without bending over or messing the part in your hair. You would have failed - hell, even Pratchett, Hiaasen, and Wodehouse wrote fairly blah first books - but even mentioning those authors suggests that you were going to try to work some of their trademarks into your book. You didn't. Therefore, telling me who you read is like telling me what you like for dinner... if it doesn't affect the work, I can't say that I care in the least.

Build your own reputation. You've got a decent shot.

Signed
I read Pratchett, Hiaasen and Wodehouse, and you, sir, are no Pratchett, Hiaasen, or Wodehouse!

My review for The Trouble With Magic is up on Reviewing the Evidence. Go take a look, and figure out which Dear Author letter it matches.
