neadods: (swept_away)
Despite all the friends who have bootlegged me episodes, last night was the first time I've actually managed to be deflowered introduced to the new Doctor.

OMGSQUEEEEEEE! He is JUST as cool as everyone said he was!

WARNING: THE REST OF THIS POST IS FULL OF SPOILERS FOR EVERY VERSION OF THE DOCTOR PLUS A PARODY. No, I'm not cutting it. For heaven's sake, I'm probably the last person in LJ-land to have seen these eps anyway.

An interesting blend of the old and the new. It was wierd to see Dr. Who with real production values - like seeing the new, well-animated Scooby Doos, half of me is thinking "Yes! It's about time!" and the other one is thinking "But it's just not right without the fromage factor." Fortunately, there was plenty of adherence to Whovian roots: The minute I saw all those mannikins, I thought "if this is really Dr. Who, they're going to move eventually." And they did! Huzzah! I almost though I'd burst from retro-glee when their fingers hinged down for guns; I forget which Baker episode that was, but it was a classic. Wheee!

"I think it's the same man. I think he travels in time. I think he's immortal." Well, 2 out of 3 ain't bad!

Not getting over the new TARDIS control room, though. When did uberclean postmodern white plastic turn into cable-ridden steampunk with a seriously Freudian manual pump action control? (And where is my link to that Dr/TARDIS/sonic screwdriver drabble I wrote?)

This Doctor is edgier and darker than them all; even Hartnell wasn't as coldly brutal as this one was at the end of "The End of the World." But that was interestingly explained, and I liked the explanation - this one has seen too much pain and horror. (I certainly hope that they explain WTF happened to Gallifrey and why he - the guy who saves everything - wasn't able to save it! Also would like to see them explain how he's gotten extra regenerations.)

It even explained the sexual edge he's suddenly developed (at least beyond "BBC rules have changed and we can do it now.") Any time the old Dr. got that 700-year-itch, he could pop by home, drop into a pub, use his best smarmy/charming/bashful (depending on incarnation) grin and say the line "If I wasn't such a renegade I could be leader of this whole planet, y'know" until he struck it lucky. Now it looks like he's stuck with the companionship of those upright apes he sacrificed his birthright for.

Although the intense, not-quite-passionate way he kept staring at Rose kept reminding me of a bit from "Dr. Who and the Curse of the Fatal Death":
DR.: You're the only companion I've had.
FEMALE COMPANION: Doctor, you've had lots of companions.
DR.: But you're the only one I've... had.

(That reminds me - [livejournal.com profile] tridentx? Did I loan you my copy of Fatal Death? I can't find it.)

My one complaint is this: I don't like the single story in an hour structure. Even with the "last week on/next week on" overlaps and the endless shots of running down corridors, by the time you stitched 5-7 mini episodes together you got a lot more backstory than they're making time for here.

Now the only remaining question is - can I go ahead and order the DVDs from Amazon.ca nownownow or would it be better for American ratings to wait and buy the American disks? Because not only MUST this season be mine, but I want the Tennants too!

ETA: NGAAAHHHRRRGH! Amazon.com isn't even listing it for preorder and Amazon.ca won't ship until mid may! *stares thoughtfully at pile of homeburned CDs from friends*
