Who # Four scarf links
Apr. 16th, 2006 11:26 amGot to surfing last night between frustrating bouts of not-downloading the new Who, and found a couple of much better instruction links for reproducing the Tom Baker signature scarf.
Official BBC Enterprises knitting pattern for the "Doctor Who" scarf This is the BBC pattern plus the Joy Gammon pattern from "The Doctor Who Pattern Book." Crochet instructions also included. They're both variations on the first scarf, the one he's wearing in the icon. Includes crochet instructions, although the original scarves were done in garter stitch. These are full 20-plus-foot recreations.
The Whovian motherlode. The first site to acknowledge that it wasn't always the same scarf, this has 5 different patterns and dates them by episode and year. Tagged onto the end is a nice generic pattern "received off a board some time ago" with the brown colorway (early episodes) and the maroon colorway (later episodes) and suggests more appropriate lengths for adults, teens, and children. (The adult one is 10 feet long; more manageable for those of us who are not as tall as Tom Baker.)
Please note, however, that this link is pop-up hell.
But the best of them all is doctorwhoscarf.com. This resource has photographs, patterns, and yarn recommendations for the Season 12, 15, 16, & 18 scarves. The directions aren't as clear as the site above (on this one, there's a colored chart with a number of how many rows to make in that color, and an explanation of the row count on a separate page), but preferable because there are many photographs and no popups. There's also a page telling the history of the original scarves and a good links page.
