neadods: (busy)
Reality is catching up with some of my projects. For instance, woodburning designs on my feast gear and the basket? Yeah, that would be pretty... except that I use my feast gear only twice a year and then it's covered in food, so why spend hours fancying it up? Furthermore, it turns out that the wooden trencher doesn't even *fit* in the basket I usually use for feast gear. Oops. So much for that project!

And while I want to do the assorted quilts... (no, I want to *have* the quilts; different concept, really) I'm just not interested in sewing right now. I don't see a point in forcing myself to do something that isn't currently interesting in lieu of something that I'd prefer to be doing. That does nobody any good, and makes for crap work.

Which leads to my second pensive point; several projects that I have all the materials for simply aren't as attractive now as they were when I first thought of them. Which was the point of making this the catch-up year, so I wouldn't have time lags like that anymore, although I haven't really caught up, and probably won't now in the next 2 months.

Grr, argh.

(userpic aimed at the first of these stories)

How old were you when you lost your virginity? I ask because the government-sponsored abstinence programs are being expanded beyond high school to cover all adults up to age 29. This is because Wade Horn, assistant secretary for the Administration for Children and Families, said Congress has stipulated that the money should be targeted to those most likely to bear children out-of-wedlock... The new federal guidelines note that the highest rates of out-of-wedlock births occur among women in their 20s, not among teens.

Naturally, while there are opponents who point out that 90% of people are having sex in their 20s, nobody is pointing out the reasons why a woman might not be legally married. Nobody has yet asked how many of these single mothers would happily be married if they were allowed to marry the woman they love.

And certainly nobody in the abstinence program is talking about how birth control and access to contraceptives (including Plan B) would reduce both the rate of abortions AND out-of-wedlock births.

On a much sillier note, via [livejournal.com profile] filkertom - the Thriller video, done budget Bollywood style. Behold the power of curried cheese!

(And speaking of the power of cheese... I am always amazed at how some fanwriters consistently write a well-traveled, 900+-year-old alien as if he was a rather breathless and naieve 14-year-old girl. But that's another post.)
