The anti-choice pink-and-fluffy "It's all for the babies! Sweet, innocent, unborn babies!" party line has never been all that convincing in the first place. Not when you take a hard look at the correlation between anti-choice policies and rates of female/infant poverty, lower education, and even infant mortality.
But every now and then, the mask comes off so completely that the ugly face of sexual-woman-as-misbehaving-property is clearly exposed. As in South Dakota once again, where the State House of Reps defeated a proposal to allow teenagers to seek confidential prenatal care.
Pregnant? Scared? Victim of incest? Tough noogie, you little ho, Dakota's going to make sure that you have open lines of communication with yourowners parents if you want it or not. [S]aid Rep. Chuck Damschen, R-Hampden, "It drives a wedge between the daughter and the parents, and we don't want that."
God knows that medical personnel don't have a right to medical opinions. And certainly God knows that Father Knows Best and would never EVER actually hurt his little wayward darlin': Rep. Jim Kasper, R-Fargo, said the legislation left too much decision-making power in the hands of doctors... He said the argument that the bill would help girls in abusive situations was not strong enough to allow any pregnant girl to seek prenatal care in confidence.
Besides, it's not like pregnant women really need medical care anyway; and maybe their parents have something better to do with their money than waste it on the little cows: "Vast generations have been born without the type of medical care and prenatal care that we have today," said Rep. Dan Ruby, R-Minot. "It's great that people get the treatment early, but we don't need to do something that is going to take away the authority of the parents, who are responsible for paying the bills."
This is the unvarnished voice of the people who just want to help the innocent unborn children. This is the attitude behind "abortion hurts women and breaks up families" homilies. Next time someone is so "concerned" that they insist that their choices are better for you than yours are, remember that the concern isn't about the baby. It's about the bills
