calapine has a post that makes me feel better but not enough to overlook the racism.

Learn from my mistakes - when stirring up the roasting asparagus, I managed to touch the back of my hand straight to the heating element on top of the oven. The 400-degree heating element. I now have a two-inch second-degree burn/brand across the back of my right hand.
I'm telling you this not just to imply "be smarter than me, pull roasting racks out of the oven to stir up the contents" but to say the thing about running lots and lots of cold water on burns? So very true! I was in the middle of cooking everything up, so I just shoved my hand under the faucet for the next 15 minutes straight. (Fortunately, I could do this and still stir things on the oven - and without sticking my face in the steam from the steamer. Important, that.) For the next few of hours, every time it hurt, back into cool-getting-colder water it went until it went numb again.
By nighttime, it didn't hurt at all. This morning, there's no inflammation in the skin around the burn and the only pain - and it was low-level and over in about 10 minutes - was when I directly touched it while dabbing aloe sap on it. (Last night, right before I went to bed, I pinched the aloe and let the sap drip; less pressure to the damaged skin.)
I'm pretty sure that if I hadn't run the cold water on it for so long, I'd be in a lot worse shape.
