PSA: Zen Timers
May. 3rd, 2010 06:58 pmI've been using a kitchen timer while I try to organize my life, but while that's fine for "I will clean the basement for 60 minutes while listening to the radio," it's pretty jarring for "I will take 15 minutes to quietly read." (Not to mention painful. Startled cats dig their claws in deep when they flee the loud bell that shattered their happy sojourn in your lap.)
You can buy meditation timers that chime or gong quietly at preset intervals, but they're awfully expensive - the cheapest I've found is $70, and it's half plastic and uses batteries. Hardly eco-conscious, and one more thing to dust.
Or, it turns out, you can download timed mp3s for free. Each starts with a single "ding" and then stays silent until the end, when it will chime 3 times.
Jet City Orange has a high-pitched bell in 10, 15, 25, 30, 45, and 60-minute lengths, plus an ad for their meditation timer app. Audio Dharma has a deeper gong at 15, 20, 30, 40, 45, and 60-minute lengths.
