What is the line between homage and plagiarism? Because there's a fic. It's really funny fic. I'd love to recommend it.

...Except that I also recognize the provenance of at least one of the lines in it and the title itself. They aren't exact quotes, but they're unmistakeably based on something else and there's no "blah blah adapted from" or "hat tip to" from the author. And I can't help but think that if there are two, there are probably more I'm not catching.

It's not like the fic I saw a while back that had passing references to just about all of the story cycles in the fandom - I mean, I didn't see a credit list, but it was quite obvious that everyone was expected to know the original references. So that? Homage.

But this? It's a really funny Sherlock fic...

...that happens to have one of THE most recognizable quotes from 1776 tossed into it.

And I can't help thinking that expecting the audience of Sherlock - a British adaptation of a famous set of British books - to get it... well, it just isn't the target market for 1776!

ETA:
JOHN ADAMS (speaking to Benjamin Franklin about how history would view the Revolution): "Franklin did this; Franklin did that, Franklin did some other damned thing. Franklin smote the ground and out sprang George Washington, fully grown and on his horse. Franklin then electrified him with his miraculous lightening rod and the three of them -- Franklin, Washington *and the horse* successfully won independence."

FRANKLIN: "I like it."

ETA2: Looking at the fic again, it seems obvious that the title is meant to be recognized as the Avenue Q parody it is, which is a point for homage.
