I think that's just the way things are "supposed" to be lately. Very cookie cutter. No one wants to take any chances and most of the country seems stuck in some kind of retro. Stories are supposed to be a certain length, written in a certain style. One small e-publisher on a list I used to belong to said that they were trying to imitate the immediacy of the movies or some such.
