I think it's the stages of grieving. Some people are still at Denial, and all this "I go when she goes" stuff is somewhere between Anger and Bargaining. They'll get to despair and then to acceptance soon enough. In the meantime we'll get a lot of "Fix the errors of the evil PTB" fics. Not the end of the world.
The thing is that DW fandom in general is robust against cast changes, 'cos it's happened so many times before. The endless renewal of changing Doctors and companions is what's kept it going so long in the first place. Which is why it's such a pity that relations between new and old fans seem to be deteriorating (though I may just be looking in the wrong places), when this is an ideal time for the old hands to be helping the new ones.
