I figure the kids are in the best position to have the Earthbound solution, as they have not only not traveled in space or time, they're just the right age to be worrying themselves about jobs and identities.
The show may be working its way up to it - it brought Sarah Jane back, and had the Fifth Doctor, and Tennant has name-checked Jamie, Tegan, and Nyssa.
