My personal post CoE canon: "Putting right what once went wrong, Dr. Samuel Be - I mean, the Doctor, arrives to fuel up at the rift and almost falls into the hole. Gwen is picking through the wreckage while Rhys watches nervously, the baby in a snuggie. Gwen explains what happened, the Doctor shakes his head. Privately deciding that aliens who shoot up from one species' kids will do it again on another planet and jealous of Jack getting emo to match his - THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!, the Doctor goes back to 1965, sorts the aliens, hands over the virus cure and the hailing/killing frequencies along with a sharply-worded note to UNIT explaining that if they need a focus point they're going to pick a volunteer from the kids in hospital already dying of something uncurable or He Will Have Words, and then kicks Jack just because. Then he heads off to have words with the Shadow Proclamation.

Returning to the present and his now-restored fuel station, the Doctor kicks Jack again for good measure and tells him to take better care of his family. As Jack had not mentioned this little detail to Ianto yet, there is a long discussion followed by lots and lots of torrid makeup sex, much of it three-way.

Because Gwen is only part time and Rhys won't bring the baby near the hub, the Doctor promises to send them more ex-companions, starting with Donna, who he's figured out how to cure."

The regen specials are going to Joss this, but until then, that's my canon and I'm sticking to it. Not going to write it into proper fic, but there you go. Anyone who wants to take it and run with it is free to do so.

You win the internet.

(Are you sure you won't write it? maybe just the three-way sex?)

Hee. If I can't get a re-write of Children of Earth to gel, this might be my new canon. And Gwen is picking through the wreckage while Rhys watches nervously, the baby in a snuggie. needs to be in a fic somewhere.

No offense, but not quite my cup of tea. I'd rather assume that CoE happened as seen. Even though Jack's vision of Torchwood is pretty much rubble, there's still a rift, there's still a number of things going in and coming out of it, which means there's a job to do and only one person who's really qualified to run things.

Looking back...Jack was really a crappy boss and his recruiting left much to be desired. He deliberately picked broken, damaged people so that he could be "daddy" and quite honestly, none of those people had any real business in that line of work. Too many lies, too many secrets, too many vulnerabilities.

What I'd like to see is Gwen marching into UNIT and telling them "Torchwood needs to continue, but this time done right." They assist her into getting things set up and help her recruit the right people who get the right training and get the job done the way it should be done.

And when Jack comes back and tries to take over again, Gwen very kindly sits him down, gives him a cup of tea and gently tells him to sod off. :)

I love ya, Nea, but that's a little too shiny, happy to me. I actually came up with a perfectly twisted way to rectify the whole situation on the drive back up from Shore Leave. What do you think of this:

The bomb in Jack blew up on the Rift. Jack's life was altered by energy from the heart of the TARDIS, and the TARDIS can use Rift energy as fuel.

Jack regenerated from only 30% of his previous body. That means there's still 70% of him in the Hub rubble. How do we know that the fact that he exploded on the Rift didn't imbue every piece with regenerative energies? How do we know that there isn't another Jack out there floating around Cardiff, perhaps with no knowledge of who he was thanks to the fact that his brain was (at least it looked like it) with the portion of the body that regenerated onscreen.

That would give us the Jack that left at the end of CoE, as well as a Jack that never did what we saw. Bring the new Jack into a reconstituted Torchwood (because you know Gwen's not going to let it rest), and you have a great Gwen story of her dealing with the fact that Jack's there, but it's not the Jack that sacrificed his grandson without so much as a by-your-leave.

OR, since that's kind of fanwanky to the Clone!Doctor degree, Jack wanders the galaxy. Comes back and finds that Gwen has rebuilt Torchwood to help against another 456 type of invasion. He tries to get her to take him back in, but she forces him to work his way back into the organization. Force Jack onto the outside. There we have a great Gwen story as well as a great Jack redemption story. Hell, we almost have Jack trying to be Nick Knight or Angel in there. Gwen might be the only one who could bring Jack to try to redeem himself in her eyes for what he's done.

I'm convinced Gwen's going to rebuild Torchwood in some form, much like Jack did after Canary Wharf. I'm just not entirely sure how I'd like to see Jack come back, which I'm also convinced will happen at some point.

Gwen's bound to be the one who rebuilds Torchwood; she was much more effective a leader than Jack.

OTOH, if I'm handwaving, I want to wave Ianto back in.

It's fandom. We're about to have 1000 options.

I agree that Jack is a completely crappy boss; I've felt that all along. But I still want to find an alternative with Jack not so dark and Ianto still alive.

Yes. this.

Jack is just not a leader - he's good on ops, crap at planning, strategy, etc. Gwen would make a much better boss of Torchwood than he's been. Esp. with Donna on staff too. Fixed brilliant Donna. If they could get Lois in too as agent-in-training, and Agent Johnson to help Jack and Ianto handle the heavy stuff, it'll be totally shiny.

No, although I now wonder if there's something subtle about using Children of Earth and the same initials.
