Game On Organizing
Oct. 26th, 2009 07:05 pmEver since I heard there was a book called The Game On Diet, I've been fascinated. Not because I need another diet, but because it had turned *everything* involved in dieting - not just the food, but getting enough water, sleep, exercise, etc., into a points system and then set up teams, with actual rewards.
From that moment I've been trying to figure out how to apply that to organizing my house and my life. And now I've got a prototype to test.
First I divvied up all the bazillion things I try to get done and rated them into overall points, then I subdivided into what each portion is worth. The goal is to get 100 points a week, or thereabouts (it's actually possible to go slightly above).
CLEANING (35 points)
- vacuum (5)
- mop (5)
- wipe down kitchen (5)
- wipe down bathroom (5)
- laundry (1 per load, averaging 4 per week BUT no points if I don't put it away)
- declutter an area (11)
HEALTH/DIET (~15)
- exercise (1 point per 30 minutes, expecting an average of 5. -10 if I don't exercise at all)
- "me time" (1 point per hour, expecting an average of 3)
- freezing foods for later (1 per meal, expecting an average of 5)
- making a meal plan (1) (-5 per meal if I end up eating from the cafeteria)
- trying a new recipe (1)
HOBBIES (~15, in a mix-and-match)
- writing an LJ essay (5 per)
- writing reviews (5 per)
- writing fiction (10)
- knitting (5 per inch)
- sewing new garb (15)
BIG TICKET (time sucking items) (20 per, 1 per week)
- escorting
- travel/events
- take a class
- make a Book Thing run
- household repair or decorating
- paying bills
MISC (15)
- clear email queue (1)
- read (1 per hour)
- run computer scans (1)
- burn off backups to CD (1 per)
- Odd Job, general (10)
Mind you, it's possible to tick off two things at one time - I consider knitting while listening to an audio as "me time," so it would count for both health and crafts, or I'll do the walk/jog workout while putting laundry away (they work surprisingly well together).
Right now there are few penalties and no prizes, but that will change if I can get this to work. Because if it does - I'm going to open a challenge to anyone interested out on LJ, and Game On!
