Actual first line of the book I just tried (and failed) to read: "The story I'm about to tell must never be told."

And this, boys and girls, is why I think I'm never going to buy a book again unless I can get an e-sample of the entire first chapter. OY!

By any chance was this "Witch and Wizard"? -- Gods, worse thing I've read in years. And incompetently written, to boot. (I ripped it up on iRead, don't think I even bothered to post a review here - most of the reviews I post on LJs are positive).

The other book that comes to mind is: "I Am Number Four", which actually wasn't bad - tho' it was totally different than I was expecting.

Shadowfall: A badly written fanfic self-published Novel of Sherlock Holmes.

I knew better, I knew better and still I ordered it without a sample...

I'm kind of disappointed that the next line must not have been "The End."

Alas, no. That came far too much later.
