My Only Royal Wedding Post

Yes, I got up to watch it. It's news that doesn't involve bombs; celebrity that doesn't involve being a drunken, stoned Hollywood has-been. That's the kind of history I like to witness.

The dress was perfect. Streamlined, flattering - and classic enough that nobody's going to be pointing and laughing 20 years later, plus it'll look good on most of the body types that'll be emulating it.

And my favorite crowd moment? The sign being waved that said "Checkmate, Kate, You've Taken the King."

I guess I'll watch some footage, but I didn't get up at 6 AM for OUR wedding-- sure not going to do it for strangers. It'll be all over the internet anyway. But jolly good luck to them.

Before the waving from the balcony, the people holding the "Checkmate Kate" tried to hold their sign up, and the crowd immediately starting calling for them to lower it - it was very easy to block the view of the balcony.

It would be. (I thought the same about most of the hats, sometimes even before "That's so ugly." "How rude - nobody behind you will be able to see a thing!")

But I'm glad they got the sign up on TV. Hopefully they lowered it right away after!

WHAT THE HELL was wrong with Harry's hair? No one could have combed it? They have no product at the castle?

Really? Harry looks like he has a ton of hair on screen. a ton of uncombed hair. :-) God knows where he got it since his father and all his uncles seem to be quite follicularly challenged.

That was an amazing dress, yes. Someone on another comm complained it was "just pretty", but I think the thing that stood out about it was precisely the understatedness of it.

Heh, I think my favourite moments were split between a snapshot of the Queen reviewing the troops and Prince Harry going "must... not... grin...", and all the wild and wonderful hats people were wearing for the occasion.

THIS. In 10-20-30 years, that dress is still going to look good. Maybe people then will sniff that the sleeves should bell a bit or the neckline should have a scallop, but the lines? Eternal.

Wonderful is not the word I would use for those hats. "Eldrich horror" is how I would describe 9/10s of them...

I think it was supposed to be a Lover's Knot. More's the pity, because it was not only stupid looking, her entire outfit was the totally wrong color for her (made her look like a blob because it dulled her whole face - AND she wore that horrible gothy eye-makeup!). Don't get me wrong - Goth is a terrific fashion statement. Somewhere ELSE. Or, at least, have an outfit that goes with it - which this one did not.

But, maybe I have no class - I loved her butterfly hat. It's a Philip Treacy - and, coincidentally enough, he collaborated most closely w/Alexander McQueen (who I was HOPING could do the dress - or, at least, his house - but never thought in a million years she would pick.

Punchline of the day? I mean, besides all the "Me next, Harry!" signs? Her dress was almost exactly like MINE!!! The differences were so minor - mine was white, hers was off-white. My lace was beaded, hers was not. She had a modest v-neck, I had a collar. And her skirt was pleated, mine was gathered. Oh, wait - my yoke was tulle - that's actually the biggest difference. But the over-bodice & the sleeves were all lace. I only wish I had been able to contact David Tutera to bet him a wedding that his "pick" was going to be entirely wrong (which it was. giggle!).

Her dress was almost exactly like MINE!!!

I've seen pictures of Kate's gown next to Grace Kelly's gown, and they really are the same thing, just with slightly different details.

The big first-noticeable difference between hers & Kelly's was the exact shape of the skirt (Kelly's was poofy-er), & Kelly's had a horizontal waist piece, but, good call - yes, absolutely.

But I just saw the official pictures - & it turns out that the bottom half (or so) of Kate's dress was patterned - either brocade or damask! Not plain/smooth as the news cameras seemed to show (HD still isn't that good, I guess (-: ). Mine was definitely plain satin (& a trifle shinier than I wanted, but the other 95% was there, so I snapped it up. Total bargain, too, but I digress (-: ).

The cameras were washing out several details. The commentators kept trying to describe what color of blue the mother of the bride was wearing, and all I saw was pale gray.

Yeah, we noticed that, too. We could barely tell the bit about "blue" in her outfit.

Turns out the bottom (half or so) of Kate's skirt was embroidered!! Once I had gotten anything like a close-up look at it, I still thought it was probably brocade. But I am so glad she didn't wear white-white; this was a great color on her.

Still can't reconcile myself to Camilla's outfit, color-wise. Hat was beautiful, of course - then again, of course, it was a Treacy.

And, it has to be said: both Beatrice & Eugenie need to have trainers or keepers when they go out shopping (Whip & a chair? Stun guns? Tasers?). Eugenie specifically needs to either lose the weight or dress to it - one or the other, please! Vivian Westwood & generous curves do not do well together - the term "couch" comes to mind (I don't think I'd dare be dressed by her, & everyone's always telling me how thin I still am!). Of course, Eugenie did much better than Beatrice when it came to the after-party:

Beatrice simply shouldn't be allowed to dress herself, period.

TBH, every time I saw a Treacy hat specifically mentioned, I thought it was horrible. I saw only one in the entire crowd I liked, and that for only a nanosecond.
