I'm holding off until next week for a full comment, but so far, it seems paint-by-numbers. Meh.

In the rest of the news, Rapture not happened. However, furniture starting to go into the newly refinished sections of the house is happening.

I agree - it felt so very predictable. I was hoping they wouldn't go in the direction they did; for a couple of minutes it was actually starting to open up some interesting philosophical questions. And then... no. Completely paint-by-numbers, as you say, leaving me with no sympathy for either side.

BTW during the show they said something about no episode next week...

America? yeah, they're not going to run a new ep over the holiday weekend (but they are running a season 5/6 marathon minus Christmas Carol...or maybe it was just SPACE network for Canada that was doing that), so yeah its off next week and we'll be behind the Brits for the rest of the first half of the season.

Or, for those of us who don't wait for BBCA or SPACE, we'll be ahead of much of the US by that same week.

Haven't seen the Who yet, but some favorite Apocalypse Not Now dialogue comments from The Guardian:

So it turns out that the Rapture is due at six o'clock this evening ...

A just God would have waited until after Doctor Who.

I just love that the people with absolute faith that it will happen, will continue to have absolute faith when it doesn't.

Yes, it's almost as if they have taken leave of their critical faculties.

My husband, who is visiting his farmland family today in Iowa, said he'd be in the ideal location, surrounded by corn and cows, but don't worry: he'll come back to find me.

They all say that, but come the Apocalypse he'll be too busy repopulating the planet with some floozie he met in a roadhouse diner to make the trip back.

I, on the other hand, put a lot more stock by God's words to Noah after the flood...

And this she thinks is more credible than the Rapture?

I'm going to have to check that tomorrow. I'm still waiting to hear what's up with Camping himself. Last time he pulled this, there wasn't world-wide instant communication, not really. NOW, however...

200-odd people at the American Atheists' Society "Not The Rapture" party. No sign of anything unusual occurring. We sold $100 in T-shirts and bumper stickers (without being obtrusive about it -- we just let a few people know we had them and then sat off in a corner with friends), made some valuable contacts, and may have added another event to our fall schedule.

Just wondering if this week provides an out for the opening of the season -- especially since it appears the Doctor knows something about the primary technology driving this week's ep. (Trying to avoid spoilers, and all that.)

I'd like to think that there's something deeper to it, but I'm not holding out hope.

I liked the fact that Rory did what he thought was right, instead of letting Amy and the Doctor push him around. Nice to see him standing up for himself finally.

Laughed this morning when the 6am news presenter on the radio announced the rapture hadn't happened. Darn, I was so busy, I didn't notice! *rolls eyes*

In one of the novels, Rory showed a lot of attributes that have finally started showing up on the screen - the caring, the willingness to help that led him to become a nurse in the first place. And Amy supported him in it (at least at first) which made me think a lot better of her.

I still haven't read any of the novels. :(

I find Amy hard to really like - I just can't seem to engage with her.

I very much would prefer to see the Amy and Rory of the book than of the screen - for her, onscreen a lot of what I think we're supposed to see as feisty and determined comes across as selfish, whereas his devotion is making him a bit of a puppet as opposed to the guy we saw starting to crack the mystery by himself in Eleventh Hour.

In the book there was a huge passage about how Rory had tried to be a doctor for Amy, but discovered that he really liked nursing, that it let him have more time with his patients and be the nurturing carer that he wants to be. And he follows Amy not because he has nothing better to do or even because he's so besotted that he's blind to her bad traits, but because 1) he loves her in part because she needs someone to care for her and 2) at the end of a day full of life and death decisions, in many ways she's *his* version of the madman in the box - someone who sweeps him off on adventure and lets him leave his burdens far behind.

I wish I could remember now; all my Who books are barricaded by boxes of stuff from the library. It was one of the latest set - King's Dragon? Glamour something or other? I wibbled about it at the time, but that was almost a year ago.
