RIP Steve Jobs

It says everything that needs to be said when someone at the knitting store looked at her iphone and announced the news to us, that when I came home I dialed up the Apple website on my ipad, and that I showed it to M while she was syncing her ipod.

That I'm typing this on that ipad. That if I wasn't, I'd be typing it on Windows, which was created to emulate the Apple interface. That I write software manuals explaining how to use a GUI.

And if I was relaxing, I'd be knitting while listening to an audiobook, a format Neil Gaiman has said was dying until ipods resurrected them. Or I'd be listening to a podcast. Or maybe writing to one of my friends from Staggering Stories, who I met through their podcast.

Steve Jobs created the world I live in and the tools I use.

Wow - I just woke up ~20 minutes ago so I did not know he'd passed. I knew he was sick but... wow.

And don't forget that he was also in charge of Pixar when it gave us Toy Story 1-3, Monsters Inc., WALL-E, Up, Finding Nemo, Ratatouille, Cars, and The Incredibles....

I fondly remember our first Mac way back in the mid-1980's. K said we could get a computer for $X that he could use, or a Mac for (I forget) $1.5X that we could both use. Never regretted the decision.

There was a "Zits" cartoon some years back in which the teen boy tells his dad that for Christmas he wants a little box that fits in his pocket and holds and plays a thousand songs. His dad thinks the boy's making fun of him, wanting him to go into a store and ask for a thing that can't exist.

As Obama said, much of the world learned of Steve Jobs' death on a device that he'd created.

Thanks, Steve. You will definitely be remembered.
