Before I start, a couple of notes. I am pretty much looking only at Sherlock BBC fics and Sherlock/John is about the only pairing I'm interested in (although I certainly don't object if someone else joins the party.) So if you're looking for recs of a different type, this isn't the journal to be looking in. I'm not judging folks who are interested in other pairings -- I'm hardly one to talk about judgement, considering that I apparently also have a huge thing for animal-centric AUs based on BBC Sherlock. O.o
CANON
Reminder to myself that Blackstone Audio sells Sherlock canon and Lit2Go gives away mp3s for free. Doyle fans: Beyond the City Y/N?
Gorgeous canon cover by "JamestheShark"
MISC, NO SPOILERS
Beautiful Ideas Mike Stamford didn't introduce John to Sherlock to be nice. He knew he was introducing nitro to glycerin, and he wanted to see the boom.
I'm struggling a bit to describe Two Better Men. Plotwise it's not much, but I'm fascinated at the meta way it discusses John and Sherlock:
They were also like storybook characters. Always dashing about with one foot in some dangerous adventure and the other in the everyday tedium of domestic London. Being martyrs, heroes, rogues. On one or two occasions they were criminals too, murders, antiheroes. It depends on who you talk to. ... Nobody ever saw them just being men.
DELICIOUS CRACK, NO SPOILERS
redscharlach came up with "Sherchocs". Someone made them and added new ones
Giggle*snort vid to Call Your Girlfriend (Spoilerphobes: the reference to "all episodes" means S1 only.)
Howlingly hilarious article about The Physics of Fan [Slash]Fic Sex (Remove yourself from work and drinkables from the monitor/keyboard area), which in turn inspired this equally hilarious
use-of-every-cliche John/Sherlock fic Physics.
AUs, NO SPOILERS
If you can roll with the concept of a completely different situation with a couple of familiar names and really familiar personalities, read on. (And I know that a bunch of you read the one where they're all werewolves and liked it.)
The Regent's Park Regulars A modernization of Blue Carbuncle starring a very pissy swan and his friend the duck. Who do not have names because wild animals don't.
Man and Beast part 1, part 2, part 3. Porny but also somewhat plotty one about a werewolf who is caught for experimentation and the man shoved into his cage on the day of the full moon to see what happens. NSFW. I've recced a lot of
jupiter_ash; like
etothepii, what sounds like an unworkable premise is surprisingly compelling.
A Study in Squawking Actual "John is kidnapped and Sherlock has to find him" casefic... wherein John is John, but Sherlock is a medically-enhanced macaw. The first time I read it, I kept thinking "this'll never work; I'll stop the next paragraph" until I'd devoured the whole thing. And then I got it onto Tubso for re-perusal the next day.
Okay, I like this one mostly because I was horsey back in the day: New Scotland [Horse] Yard in which someone on the kink meme said they couldn't get the image of John as a Thelwell shetland pony out of their head.
SPOILERS!!!
Interview with Ben Cumberbatch's violin teacher minor spoilers all 3
SPOILERS FOR BELG:
A Bramble in Belgravia cartoon
A Shambles in Fitzrovia I scared the cats, I laughed so hard the first time I read it.
SPOILERS FOR BASK: The Baskerville Classification Read the comments too; they are not to be missed.
