"Ben" is the theme song from a horror movie. About a *killer RAT.*

But in the UK will forever be associated with a toddler who died of liver disease and sparked a brief upsurge in organ donors. It was his favourite song.

Forever is probably an exaggeration - I don't suppose it means much to anyone under the age of 30.

That's certainly a better association than the original one!

And this came into the conversation because....?

Apparently Ben the rat was friendly to the boy in the movie-- can't say I saw it, but that song did get a lot of airplay back in 1972, when I was in junior high and Michael Jackson was still black.

I (born in 1967) didn't recognize "Ben" at all, but my husband (born in 1963) knew it well.

It was sung as a song of love and devotion on Glee last night. And yeah, there was apparently a very touching bond between a boy and his homicidal (but not towards him) rodent.

I was probably not meant to get the giggles during that scene last night.

I was watching with a whole group of under-30s - they don't have that association.

(I'm at just the right age that "Bad" has been forever tainted for me by Weird Al. I see the wrong video in my head...)

I know that problem - I'm not allowed to sing when "American Pie" is playing, lest I taint it with Weird Al.

I'm just so glad they didn't do "Beat It," I'm just sayin'.

I got through the entire "Bad" sequence by quoting "Hoe!" "Hoe?" "Hoe!" "Oh!" to myself and giggling like a maniac.

YANA - I kept expecting the Weird Al lyrics last night.

It could have been worse. They didn't do "Beat it." I so much prefer the Weird Al version of that one.

I've never liked the song. Not back in the day, not last night. But I heard other songs that were new.

It was the only time I set my DVR for Glee!

There were a couple I'd never heard before. They did that on the Madonna episode too; came up with one I'd never managed to hear.
