Benedict Cumberbatch Calls Sherlock a Great Dane And Other Revelations. Ben reacts to "hedgehogs that look like Martin Freeman," a "BELG-spoiler flashmob" and that Great Dane.

FIC
Before I list recs, the occasionally posted disclaimers. I pretty much read only BBC-oriented fic; the only pairing I'm interested in is John/Sherlock; I didn't cotton to the main character in BELG; mostly the AUs I'm into are supernatural (but I don't do vampires); and I point-blank refuse to read any AU where one character is another one's actual property.

I'm not judging (slight lie: on that last category I'm judging HARD), I'm mostly saying if anything else is your cuppa, you'll have to find a second reccer who actually reads 'em.

I'm not seeing a lot of people on my flist reccing anymore, so every now and then I feel obligated to let you know what to expect out of me.

No Spoilers
Sherlock and Siri... Dear God Exactly what it says on the tin; discussions between Sherlock and iPhone's Siri.

Sherlock's Sick Day Mostly recced because of the scenes with John's co-workers at the clinic.

What Meets the Eye Obviously written between seasons (it was jossed by BELG but is still enjoyable) it is based on the premise that Sherlock has amnesia, but telling anyone would take all the fun out of deducing what his life had been.

Constantly A nice piece of fanart for the men in Sherlock's life. Art is nonspoilery; comments might be (I haven't read them.)

Also, IO9 has possibly the most wittily nasty review outside Dorothy Parker Hint: the reviewer didn't like Dark Shadows. Really, really didn't like Dark Shadows.
Honestly, after watching Dark Shadows, I am convinced Tim Burton set out deliberately to create a movie that encapsulates the slowness of immortality, the vampire's ultimate curse. After all, a movie as tiresome as Dark Shadows does not get made by accident. To drain all the entertainment value out of a movie to this degree requires a mixture of genius and fixity of purpose.

That is a very funny review. Let's see what Grahame-Smith comes up with Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Slayer.

I have a friend who is going to Chicago Tardis this year. It's her first con ever; her husband is a huge Dr. Who fan, but she's more like me, a skirmisher around the edges. She has a lot of questions here. I can answer some of them as they relate to a general con, but you've been to this particular one. Would you mind dropping over and giving her some advice? I'll let her know that you might be stopping by. Thanks!

i tried to reply, but the journal's limited to friend comments only. If you want to pass on, or point here:

1) costumes aren't obligatory; I haven't worn one in years. Or people who want to play do something simple, like just add a fez.

2) wear shoes that are comfortable and forget about it. Sore feet ruin cons.

3) unless you're screaming insults about the show, nobody's going to be anything other than welcoming, or at least let you get on with the con at your own pace. There aren't any gatekeepers quizzing you and everyone there has a different level of fandom they're bringing anyway. The woman in the corner has only seen the 10th and 11th Doctors; the guy in the chair is an expert on the second doctor, the kid has only seen Sarah Jane Adventures, the goth teen hates Who but loves Torchwood, the woman with the elaborate costume is really into steampunk more than Who but is here because friends are, and the two women with knitting are discussing a pattern from an entirely different universe. That's a con.

What Nea said, with a few more comments.

I haven't been to a con in a while, and maybe I was naive or things have gotten crazier, but I would have been fairly comfortable showing up at a good-sized con with a sleeping bag and asking some friendly-type strangers if I could crash on their hotel-room floor. Unless things have changed a lot, con people are pretty good people (if you avoid the few obvious loonies, but even they're mostly harmless, just obsessive and boring).

That said, if the husband is a much bigger fan than she is, unless she's quite interested in people-watching or conversing with strangers, she might want to take a good book or knitting or something else with which she can sit in a corner of the lobby and amuse herself and recharge her batteries for a bit. There will be a lot going on, but her level of interest may not be enough to find something to do for all the hours he wants to be there, and all the fan stuff may be kind of overwhelming. And nobody will condemn her for this.

Think of the Dealer's Room in terms of gifts for husband, but try to make sure he didn't buy that sonic screwdriver already....
