I'd signed up for a class in metal stamping - we were supposed to come back with a beaded, stamped charm bracelet (although I was still planning on making stitch markers). As it was an early morning class, I'd planned on taking the whole day off and set up a few errands for the afternoon.

I just found the message that the class is cancelled. Oh, I get my money back, and I can now go into work for a half day and hang onto that vacation time, but I'm bummed. I wanted to learn a new skill.

metal stamping is not difficult, although there are *always * techniques to learn.

you may do better to buy a book on the topic, before you buy a kit, since YOUR interest in metal stamping may not be what the kit is for.

i.. uh.. dunno if you are interested but i have free passes to shop at Bead Fest philadelphia this August.
its actually in Oaks PA near King of Prussia, and has cool (if over priced) classes, BUT there will be many many stamp supply sellers there! and many give free demos.

its a hike, but free parking also..

For the price of some of those classes, I could buy some deluxe kits!

yes, thats why i do NOT suggest the classes.

but many of the suppliers do free demos. so if you go in to shop.. you get small classes, and lots of first hand experience with the tools... plus many more choices

plus many more choices

That's the biggest draw right there - to be able to get more than the standards.

IME, taking a class is generally worthwhile -- your teacher is likely to know some of the common pitfalls that a book may or may not mention, and can also explain-by-showing when you feel like you're doing exactly what the directions say but it's still coming out wrong. YMMV depending on what sort of learner you are.

I prefer to take classes - but factoring in a drive and gas and what I'm bound to buy there vs playing with the basics at home... it's a surprisingly hard choice.

Metal stamping is easy.

We did a little bit of it in the metalsmithing class I took a couple of years ago.

I haven't done it in awhile, but I have some metal stamp letters from Harbor Freight. If you want to try it, we can schedule something for August. For free!

Well, we haven't scheduled anything yet. Saturday afternoons generally work okay for me.
