Random Fact of the Day:

Any U.S. citizen may purchase a flag that has hung over the U.S. Capitol by going to the website for your state's Senator or Representative and filling in whatever form they have under "buy flag" or "flag order."

It is possible to ask for a flag that was flown on a specific date, but I'd bet good money that flags flown on Inauguration Day, Independence Day, or 9/11 are booked into infinity.

Second random fact of the day - Congress ran out of flags shortly after 9/11.

One of the English language volunteer tutors who uses a study room at my library got one of those flags as a gift for his student.

When I first visited the US in 2003, I was shocked and kind of intimidated with the number of flags EVERYWHERE.

We're not big flag flyers here, and it was kind of scarily vehement. I imagine it's still the same.

It's still more or less the same, but what you saw was part of the explosion after 2001. Before then there weren't half as many -- official buildings, particularly patriotic homes, and car dealerships (I'm not kidding. The car dealers always have the biggest flags) and that's about it. Hanging them off bridges and is a post-9/11 thing.

As is leaving them to rot in place. A huge flag no-no, but there are a lot of flags that got planted in 2001 and never touched since.
