If you want to run a tumblr-attendee-only con, you have every right to. But if you're not, you need to play fair with ALL the attendees. More than slightly annoyed to discover that an entire amenity attached to a convention I'm attending was planned, advertised, and sold out without ever having been announced at the convention site. Even some of the most basic convention information on the website has the prelude "this is taken from tumblr." Other basic convention information is NOT on the website... but turns out a Google search finds it. On Tumblr.

*sigh* I get it. Tumblr's were it's "at" these days. But that still doesn't mean that it's fair -- or professional! -- to use it in lieu of formats that cover your entire membership. And I'd been SO excited for this one. Now I'm wondering what other ways I'm going to be informed that I'm paying money down to be told I'm not in the in crowd that weekend.

ETA: Oh. For. Fuck's. Sake. I've found the convention tumblr and am only NOW finding out about all sorts of events that weren't on the convention site proper. Like the book drive. You think maybe I could help with a book drive IF I BLEEDING KNEW ABOUT IT?

Apparently exclusivity is spreading. I already find myself cut off from some information and even ability to comment online because I don't do Facebook or Twitter, or whatever those square info-glyphs are.

Signed, Luddite, I suppose. I do have an iPod! And whatever this computer thingie is....

What really twists the knife is that I'm on the facebook for the convention... but this was planned and executed on tumblr and twitter and got its OWN facebook without a mention on the main.

There is a dead dog party. I am going to bring up that limited tickets are one thing - limited communication is quite another and unfair.

Did they ever figure out an overflow hotel? Because I'm Ms. Procrastination McPut-It-Off and am on the verge of making plans to go, but not if I can't figure out some halfway decent lodging.

Not that was announced on the web page, I say with some bitterness. Am looking through the tumblr now that I've found it but don't see anything there. I'd have to check Google Maps to see what's in the neighborhood.

Thanks for checking. Yesterday I'd found a Marriott Residence Inn (http://www.marriott.com/hotels/maps/travel/atlrn-residence-inn-atlanta-perimeter-dunwoody/) nearby that makes it a good candidate distance-wise, though I don't know how easy/safe a walk it would be between hotels on a frontage road at night. It looks like the next highway exit to the west has a bunch more, but one would probably need a vehicle to get back and forth easily.

I've been using google satellite to look at the area around the con. It's not inspiring confidence that we can go far on foot.

That's really bad. What convention is/was this? It sounds like one we want to avoid.

I don't use Facebook for online commenting (part of the whole "keeping Facebook on a very tight leash" thing -- I don't want it linking to every other site I read), and I don't comment on sites that insist I do. Their loss. And while I do use Facebook for party announcements and suchlike, I also post about them on LJ/DW *and* have a separate e-mail announcement list for those of my friends who don't do either. That's just common courtesy.

It's their very first con; I'm going to wait and see how they handle the problem... and how they handle being told that there is a BIG, BIG problem before I put the knife in so far as to name names.

That's pretty pants. I know a con company that sometimes use Twitter, but they post on their page soon after about it.

Very poor form.

What's Tumblr?

You can tell I wouldn't have been at this convention ...

I'm active on twitter and tumblr and even I don't find it acceptable or professional to put different information on different places.

I suspect I know this convention. It is a first year con but --- this is inexcusable.

Perhaps not entirely as inexcusable as Gally running the autograph and masquerade lines through the smoking area (and Gally had 23 years of experience!) but yeah, this is a MAJOR ball-dropping. And it's not even that they did all the chat on tumblr that torques me, it's that there was no big banner on the webpage saying "For the most up to date information, follow our tumblr at:..." SUCH a simple fix that could have avoided all this angst!

Damage control is mitigating much - I have a confirmation that I squeaked into one event and can buy at the door for another. They've only cheated themselves by not letting me know about the books in advance, but I'll do what I can at the Thing this weekend.

But dude! Their website is still telling people how to reserve rooms at the hotel that the tumblr says is sold out! The con has GOT to learn to speak with a unified message!
