I'm feeling hard on myself because I came home early from work and "didn't get anything done." For which read "did not work on the essay due June 1."

What I've been doing instead happens to be paying the bills, realizing that my current bill payment system is flawed*, figuring out an elegantly simple solution that should both streamline and speed things up, go through piles of back mail that had been literally stacking up, file what needs filing and recycling what needs recycling, touching up the worst mistakes of the paint job on the bathroom walls, moving and signing stuff for the oil heater guy (the reason I was home early)**, sorting through 5 bags of donated books, and decide that I deserved a treat so bought two movies for my ipad***.

You know, I typed all that up and I still feel that I got "nothing" done. Well, I can skip out of the online chat tonight early and may possibly skip tomorrow's knit night all together so that I can do something before things kick into high gear for Malice this weekend.

*When I got paid once a month, all the bills got done in one fell swoop. Now that I'm paid every other week (and loathing it), I pay whatever bills have come in that fortnight. This makes it much harder to keep track of what is/is not paid because I don't have the whole stack in front of me at once. On the other hand, it does mean I don't spend most of my month's wages within an hour.

** "We'll be there between noon and 3." He showed up at 3:50. I was in early; I could have worked an entire regular day. But then I wouldn't have gotten all that "nothing" done.

Being goal-directed has its uses but I often find my most productive days proceed in a kind of free-flow association of gradually moving forward on several tasks. I also have a tendency to underrate any work that's done sitting down. Sounds like you did plenty to me.

It's a beautiful Spring morning here in England and I'm looking out at our front garden, whcih is a mass of apple, pear and damson blossom. Glorious.
