I have something of a love/hate relationship with Big Bang Theory - I refused to watch it until there were more regular female characters than Penny. (Nothing against the character of Penny; I like her, but a show about four brilliant guys and a failed actress? SO not on!)

But M likes it, so we watch it, and as it evolved out of what someone dubbed "nerd-face" and into more rounded characterization, I've come to like it too. It's the Galaxy Quest of TV sitcoms. For all of the gang's personal faults and social issues, the geeks are equally depicted as 1) intelligent 2) working at jobs that showcase that intelligence, 3) capable of forming and maintaining close, loving relationships, 4) capable of working out their interpersonal issues & fights in a reasonably healthy and mature manner, 5) having a life full of hobbies and pursuits that bring them joy.

That's 4 and often 5 counts ahead of most of characters in a sitcom.

Penny comes out pretty well too over time: she's not a genius, but she's not stupid either, and she's shown learning higher sciences when she chooses to. She's also tolerant, adaptable, strong, practical, loyal, and doggedly determined to work towards her dream career because it's *her* goal. Again, that's surprisingly solid for at sitcom role.

Anyway, I went from like to ADORE last week, because last week's episode? Could have been filmed in my living room. If not mine, then the living rooms of just about every person I know. It really raised the bar for me.

And now I get to the news breaking about tonight's guest star - I'll not spoil the surprise for them as don't know it - and I'm dying of pre-squee. Oh, this is going to be excellent. It cannot fail.

Okay, thanks for not spoiling; It's all on the DVR since last week I had the kids and grandbaby, and all we watched was Game of Thrones, and THIS week Rich is out of town for business, so I'm holding off, so we can watch together.
BTW, I am watching marathons of "Repair my Renovation (or something like that) in which a team comes in sees what an incompetent contractor F'd up, and fixes it. It is making me very antsy about my new kitchen upcoming.... I know I have a contractor who has 1)been around for more than a decade 2) got all his licenses and permits, and 3) got great references,...but I'm STILL wary.

Shows like that always make me question my reality, so for my sanity I avoid them.

I've tried to look at BBT snippets on YouTube, and I keep bouncing off. Either it's humiliation "humor" or it feels like the show is laughing AT the characters rather than WITH them.

It started out that way. I don't feel it is anymore.

THIS.

I get really angry when people expect me to like a show that humiliates its main characters for being nerdy and awkward.

This pretty much sums up my feelings about the show and why I will never like it. I've watched a few eps (the Wil Weaton one springs to mind), but have hated it and myself for watching it.

Much like me and Elementary v the rest of my flist, I do not see in Big Bang what you see. I find the positions of most sitcom characters to be far more humiliating and them to be laughed at for much less than the accomplishments the BBT characters have achieved.

I would probably like the show if I could stand to watch it-- occasionally I see snippets that I like-- but the constant laugh-track drives me nuts. It's annoying even when K is watching it in the other room.

Does it help to know that it's actually a live audience?

Not much, no.

Bernadette and Amy are pretty darn regular, and there's many scenes with just the three women.

What I'm saying is I didn't watch regularly until they became regular characters. Amy is my favorite.

Ah, okay. Love the girls. Also love that Mayim is an actual scientist.
