So Mark Bittman of Cook All The Things fame has a new book out called VB6 about the health benefits of being vegan before 6 - basically, to eat two strictly vegan meals a day and then cut loose for the third one.

That's a little too strict for me - but I have tentatively started this week splitting my meals into vegan, vegetarian, and omnivorous. I don't know how fast any health benefits are going to kick in, considering that chocolate shakes are vegetarian and peanut butter & jelly sandwiches are vegan. But it's not a bad idea. I'll tell y'all if it works.

On a completely different topic, I'm writing this while watching a repeat of Colbert's epic interview with Paul McCartney. This show is a thing of beauty and a joy forever. "Did it make the marriage stronger to tour with Linda?" "No, I just liked her." "At what point did you find the courage or just the new feeling to say 'I'm not going to write for that other person, I'm going to write for myself'?" "Drugs."

Oh I thought of you this afternoon on the way home from work!

One of the houses on one of my routes home has established a Little Free Library at the end of their driveway - as I drove past I peeked in - it doesn't seem to have any "front" door - it's open, which seems like a bad idea long term - and it had a handful of books in it.

It's not an ideal location - there is no sidewalk on this road, and though it's an established neighbourhood, it's a pretty busy street during the day for cars, I don't think it's much of a walking street.

I hope they keep a close eye on it with no door. Mine has one and I've still lost books to rain.

I'll be curious to hear about what you work out and how it works. The strict "vegan before 6" plan wouldn't really work for me because many of my lunches are leftovers from the previous night's dinner - so if I want to be vegan before 6, I kind of have to be vegan after 6.

I find it relatively easy to eat vegetarian much of the time, but cutting back on dairy is hard.

I've already hosed up today, but I am putting serious effort into looking into vegan alternatives or vegan-izing a fair amount of what I eat. We'll see if I can keep it up for a long time, and if it has an effect.

And I *live* on dairy!
