They actually did it. Threw hundreds of thousands of people out of work to make sure millions of people won't get healthcare. I just went from having a big bonus and all my leave planned out through the end of the year to being out of work -- it's not just the Government that shuts when the Government shuts in this company town.

I hear ya. My boss is in Arizona this week working for the feds. The trip was paid upfront, so he can come back, but he has no one to report to or approve anything, and who knows when or if we'll get paid or reimbursed for any of it.

What I can't figure out is how on earth they think this will HELP people... Oh, right, they don't.

Selfish little sods. I hope Mr. O makes them pay for their stupidity rather than giving in to their antics. They're rather like the 4 year old who holds their breath until they get what they want. Pathetic.

Funny thing is, the lengths to which these idiots are willing to go shows just how well THEY think the ACA is going to work. And how popular they think it's going to be with the people who use it.

And the thing is, they've held their breath through 42 votes and an election. Get the message already! What the tea party wants isn't what the rest of the country wants!

Unfortunately, a lot of them got RE-elected.

But with the nation's opinion of Congress down in single digits by this time, you'd think they've have a clue, wouldn't you?

Oh, yeah. That's what "clueless" means.

Yeah, they don't seem to understand what 'you lost the election' means. They think it means they still get everything they want. *shakes head*

The tea party was elected on a platform of contempt of congress, and the tea party constituency wants the government to smash. And the people elected by it have no loyalty to ephemerals like the *nation* when their own voters want something.

You and me both. It's a screwed up world when you have to think "I shouldn't have paid off the car."

If this is short, I'll be okay. If it drags into the debt ceiling talks...

I would have been grateful to have had things paid off. Although yeah, it would have been nice to have the cushion.

Hopefully it will be short-lived (but long enough to put the nails in all their fracking coffins).

And Republicans wonder why they lost the last election?

(Well, sadly, they don't seem to wonder, which says it all, really).

I hope the shutdown ends soon - without any capitulation on Obamacare.

From: [identity profile] neadods.livejournal.com
There's not going to be capitulation. There's no benefit to the Dems to barter now, and the GOP is in disarray. This just lost them the next election and Cruz is so busy listening to the cheers in his head that he doesn't realize that he committed political suicide.

I sure hope it was political suicide - though he'll not be paying for it himself for another 4 years and my guess is he thinks the sheeple won't remember that far back...

We're still going to be picking up the pieces come the midterms. And traditional conservatives are just as pissed as the liberals. Hopefully pissed off enough to wrest the GOP back from the tea party.

This current temper tantrum has thrown me so far out of sympathy with even moderate GOPers, I'm halfway tempted to declare as a Democrat just to swell their numbers by one.

(for those not aware of my sitch: I'm a liberal but hate political parties as basic entities, since they're machines that work to feed themselves, not us)

Sympathies on the situation.

I saw a great comment online: ”Boehner's under so much heat and pressure, I'm surprised he hasn't turned into a diamond."

The GOP wanted the tea party to keep a majority, and they've done nothing but hurt the GOP since.

The Beltway bandit my mother works for hasn't thrown her out of work yet, but many of her colleagues haven't been so lucky; I'm sorry to hear you've been affected, too.

I hope the House manages to pull its head out of its ass soon, but I won't be surprised if these stubborn fucks try to drag this out as long as possible. I only hope it really comes back to bite them in 2014.

I'm so sorry to hear that you've been caught up in this mess. I'm still at work because a.) we're a reimbursable unit so our money doesn't come from appropriations and b.) we have a biggish backlog, but most of my agency is shut down. I hope this is resolved quickly for your sake (and that of everyone else affected by it.)

Yeah, next election ain't gonna be pretty.

We were all hoping. I quit hoping when I read that Boehner had pledged not to bring anything to a vote unless he was sure he had enough votes to pass it with ONLY GOP votes, not counting any Democrats. If the few sane House Republicans had voted with the Dems, which it looked as if they were willing to do, this wouldn't have happened.

Article in WashPost quoted some pissant R congresscrap from OK or KS: "If Obamacare takes effect, we'll never recover as a nation! We'll never be a free people again!" I don't think there's a cure for stupidity that deep. You can call it fanaticism-- same thing.

It all goes back to the way the state GOPs have gerrymandered their voting districts. If it went by one person, one vote, as it's supposed to, the Democrats would have a majority in the House and a few dozen fanatics couldn't hijack the whole damn government and economy. They don't care who hurts or how the country is damaged, so long as it makes Obama look bad or weak.

Also about 90% of Congress is now in "safe seats," so the only opposition they face is from their own party, and the GOP is challenged primarily by Tea Party loons even farther right than they are, so they lurch right to forestall them.

Good Horsey cartoon and column:

http://www.latimes.com/opinion/topoftheticket/la-na-tt-republicans-shut-down-20130930,0,2380001.story

And Cruz is looking more and more like Joe McCarthy. As long as he has everyone's attention, he's as happy as a pig in shit.

The GOP wanted the Tea Party energy and votes. Now it's stuck with the Tea Party "my way or the highway" obstructionism in its own party. I've tried to dig deep and feel sorry for them, but they made that crappy bed; it's time for them to lie in it.

And WTF goes on in Boehner's head? He can't control the Tea Party and he doesn't want them destroying his party... but then he goes ahead and keeps letting them push him around.

I agree that this may have been the GOP's bridge too far. While I never call an election until Jon Stewart tells me to, I hope that the midterm elections are now a forgone conclusion, and I begin to have a tiny bit of cautious optimism about 2016.

And they're probably right--most people will.

800,000 people suddenly screeching all but the most necessary spending to a halt? If the people don't remember, the economy will. And Wall Street's not a happy camper right now.

I wasn't going to worry about 2016 with the putative slate of potential candidates from the right. Nobody wanted Paul or Cruz last time. Now they're poison. Newt Gingrich thought he could do nothing but win -- now he's a political afterthought. (Albeit one that's egging the GOP on to shut down again, having not learned his lesson.)

Urgh, that sucks. I'm sorry.

Part of me is hoping that the Republicans will realize what a political misstep they've made, and will stop fighting a battle that they can't win, allowing this to be resolved quickly. However, that would require a hitherto unwonted degree of common sense on their part.
