I hate it, hate it, hate it when magazines talk about how to handle a small kitchen and "solve" it by ripping out a wall. So. Not. Happening.

But then M had the inspiration to get the effect without structural damage. Refrigerator in the way of the countertop? Can't move it without ripping out baseboard heaters on the other side of the door?

Put in in the doorway!

Just LOOK at all that space now!

And best yet, the other side of the doorway is the library, which now has room for two more bookcases to cover the door from that side.

One word of warning: the back of a refrigerator puts out a fair amount of heat. Be a little cautious about what books you put on those bookcases.

That caveat aside, what a fabulous solution!

Due to the doorway itself and the need not to pinch the water feeder line, there's going to be a minimum of 6 inches of space between the back of the fridge and the back of the bookcase, but I'll bear that in mind.

OTOH. it'll sure make vacuuming the coils easier. Brilliant!

Looks good! I did a similar thing in my last house with an unwanted doorway - put a bookcase either side. I just had to remember where I put the doorhandle in order to put it back on when I sold the house!

Actually I've just realised we could have done that with our living room. Though we are moving out in 6 weeks so it's a bit late now. Haha. I'll have to keep it in mind when we are arranging the furniture in the new house, there's one room with several doors in it, we may not need them all. :)

Also: that's a huge fridge. :)

M and I kept arguing about who was taking up all the space. So now she gets everything behind the left door and I get everything behind the right door, and the freezer's also split in half.
