Fandom_Wank does have its points - among them, warning me of this before Malice started.

This affirms something discussed in an earlier post... I still want a second reviewing job, and I still hope to juggle the reviewing jobs into something more. I had thought to get a job reviewing a different genre to branch out, test my skills, get more free books.

But obviously I'm not paying enough attention to my chosen genre if less than 24 hours before I head to a large regional con, I'm getting my news from Fandom_Wank!

So here's the deal; I'm throwing my lot in with mysteries wholesale. (Hey, at least it means that I only have to read the eyeball-sporking stuff in one genre.) At Bouchercon and Malice I'm going to look hard at the clubs, magazines, organizations, etc., and I'm going to seriously concentrate on making a name for myself in mysteries.

They're all struck by the double standard -- it's okay for fanfic writers to steal your work, but if they see something similar to one of their stories in your book they'll threaten to sue (or write very nasty letters).

I'd say that sums it up pretty well. I'd have a problem with that sort of thing too, if I were a writer.

I'm also struck by the fact that, out of 5 major issues mentioned in the article, exactly ONE is getting comments, and they're all "Wow, why does this guy hate fanfic so much?" when actually, what he said was pretty damn mild. I guess this is the Republican influence at work -- if you're not squeeing over fanfic, then you must HATE HATE HATE it, just like if you don't support the appointment of Christian-activist judges then you must be a goddamn Satanist liberal.

Well, actually, I thougth he sounded pretty damned Republican himself, like Ann Coulter talking about feminists. I've known some fanfic writers who actually did get plagiarized and the plagiarizers acted like Henry Hyde did when he was confrotned with his own extra marital affair. It's not like all fanfic writers go around acting like he claism they do; he just labellled the entire group as if they did. Hm. That sounds familiar.

It wasn't actually that entry that led me to say the guy hates fanfic; it was reading his other entries. In fact, his blog has a whole section devoted to him calling writers of fanfic sad plagiarists.
